In the 1930s, pom poms were used by high schools and universities as a decorative accessory for cheerleaders to improve showmanship.which caused a problem since poms were a major part of raising spirit and gaining the crowd's attention. In addition, paper poms were not usable during weather conditions such as rain or snow. Cheerleaders were out on the field to support their team in any weather condition- rain or shine. In 1965, Fred Gasthof creation and invented the first pom pom made using vinyl, or plastic, streamers. This made poms more durable and resistant to wet weather. This design's nationwide popularity was attributed to the support of the International Cheerleading Foundation, who introduced, promoted and supported the new style.
In 1928, an accountant, Walter Diemer, invented an improved version of bubble gum. The only food coloring he had on hand was pink, so for many years, pink was the common color of bubble gums. Diemer arranged to market the bubble gum in Philadelphia candy stores and the product became wildly popular with children. Fleer Company purchased the recipe, and named the product Dubble Bubble.
Ever experienced cheer camp a famous college? Surround by its famous color orange and blue? Well, I did! A tremendous amount of people have their different ideas an exciting experience in their life. Although out of all of the exciting experiences I’ve ever experienced , I would have to say my favorite is when I visited The University of Florida for cheer camp my sophomore year. I was overly excited about spending four days at The University of Florida; I stayed up all night the night before packing and getting ready to finally stay at a college for four days with my fellow cheer sisters. From that experience I learned a lot about sticking together as a team, and friendship! But, most importantly, I learned that bonding together as a team is what got us to finish strong at the end. Those four days really opened my eyes to a lot of different things and I’m glad I can say that I really enjoyed myself.
Ironically, cheerleaders get the name of a “snob” or a “brat”, however a cheerleaders job is to bring positivity and spirit to their school. To be conceited or a bully is the complete opposite of what a cheerleaders job is; which means their primary responsibility is to pump up the student body for the big game or to get others involved and support school functions. Aside from the stereotype that cheerleaders are snobby, another assumption is that cheerleaders only hang out with other cheerleaders, that they are very exclusive. In films, cheerleaders are seen as the girls that always sit at the same lunch table and no one else is allowed to sit with them, or the ones that walk the halls in the same cluster while they laugh and gossip about other girls. A cheerleader is taught to be inclusive and to get others engaged in activities throughout the school, and if cheerleaders are pushing others away by being exclusive they are not doing their
Being a cheerleader means setting an example. Cheerleaders conduct themselves in a respectable way and are very proud so that they can be good leaders on and off the sidelines. We are proud to represent our school and proud to be cheerleaders. We are the epitome of school spirit and we lead the other students in our school to be more spirited and show what it means so be enthusiastic in school. We lead the crowd and of course, we lead the cheering!
The pom poms twirling in the hands of a girl who has wanted to be a cheerleader ever since she can remember. A dream of one day being on top of the pyramid holding the pom poms in her hands while yelling, “Let’s go Webb City!”. The enormous balls that cheerleaders call pom poms are much more than people think. To some cheerleaders pom poms have a certain taste, smell, look, noise, and touch, while the people sitting in the stands just think it's a shiny ball that the cheerleaders just shake. I know, people wouldn’t think a pom pom would have such an impact on a cheerleader or a football game but they actually do. A cheerleader’s job is to get the crowd going so that they can pump up the football players and get them motivated to win the game. A big part of getting the crowd going is pom poms and a loud voice.

Even though cheerleaders’ main purpose is to support other athletic activities, cheer squads whom compete, follow all physical criteria to be considered a sport. Cheerleaders put forth an incredible amount of determination. They practice tirelessly to show off their skills, with little or no recognition for their efforts. When doing these jumps the cheerleader jumps high up into the air bringing both legs up and out simultaneously in a specific shape or form, while pointing the toes. The jumps that cheerleaders perform can easily be compared to the dunking of a basketball player. All of these jumps require adequate leg, thigh, and abdominal muscle just as any basket ball player. Cheerleading originated at a football game in 1869 between Princeton University and Rutgers University when students were helping getting the crowd rowdy. By the late 1880’s, Princeton formed an all-male pep club (Varsity). Thomas Peebles, a graduate from Princeton, took the cheers to the University of Minnesota and introduced the idea of chanting to a crowd of spectators (EpicSports). Football and fight songs were becoming extremely popular. At the University of Minnesota, a medical student named Johnny Campbell formed a group to energize both the team and the crowd to help give them more confidence (Varsity). He led an organized cheer at a football game between Princeton and Minnesota University; as a result, many consider him to be the first actual“Cheerleader” (EpicSports). “Johnny picked up a megaphone and rallied the team to victory with the first organized cheer: ‘Rah, Rah, Rah! Ski-U-Mah! Hoo-Rah! Hoo-Rah! Varsity! Varsity! Minn-e-so-tah!’ (Varsity). Although it did not change their luck during the game, it created a lasting trend and an entirely new sport. Cheerleading only continued to grow in sophistication and popularity from there.
