Pompeii
Pompeii was once one of the most predominate city states in Italy until the fateful day when Mount Vesuvius erupted. Thanks to modern technology and the curiosity of humans Pompeii has now been restored to what it might have been before the volcano. People can visit Pompeii and get a better understanding of what life was like in 79 A.D. There is much to be learned from the ways of life during the Roman Empire’s reign.
Physical Geography and Climate
Pompeii is located near modern Naples in the Italian region of Campania, in the territory of the modern city of Pompei. The city has remained intact until the present day because of being buried so quickly. Not only are its buildings complete but also the contents inside the houses and shops have been preserved. This provides a fascinating picture of "daily" life in Pompeii. The walls of the houses are covered with electoral propaganda messages or risqué jokes aimed at particular citizens. The signs on the shop doorways indicate the activity carried out there or the name of the owner. The workshops and utility rooms found provide evidence of the daily routine performed by workmen and slaves.
A variety of homes made up the city. There are elegant villas where the nobility lived. The luxurious residences belong to the middle class. There were also modest houses where several families lived. The peasant dwellings were situated around vegetable gardens or small plots of land. On the edge of the city there were brothels.
