Firstly, many organisms take damage when it comes to oil spills. However, some scientists argue that while there is definitely damage at the individual level, most populations are able to survive and continue to live in the area (“Effects of Oil Spills”). Populations, in general, are robust enough to survive most precarious situations. The effects the oil has on living things are classified as either lethal or nonlethal (“Life”). Although the nonlethal effects may not kill the organism directly, it may lead to the organism not being able to protect itself from predators. The animals that are the most affected by the oil include sea birds, sea otters, sea turtles, and fishes (“Oil Spills”). For sea otters and sea birds, the oil is dangerous because of its ability to coat these animals’ fur and feathers. The oil coating is threatening because it can lead to the animals not being able to control their own body temperature, which eventually can lead to hypothermia (“Oil Spills”). The oil can physically prevent these animals from executing homeostasis. Sea turtles do not instinctively avoid the oil and the water, and they sometimes ingest the oil when they come up to breathe (Patin). All turtles need to breath, but in an oil spill, they end up consuming the oil that remains on the su...
Oil spills and pollution can be the cause of death too much of the local marine life. An oil slick can cover up to 50 square miles polluting, and damaging all the ecosystems in which the marine life thrives killing thousands. All over the ocean surface and all over the land near the spill will be contaminated with crude oil ruin the lives of many of the animals near or who feed of the animals who were less fortunate not to make it out of the spill un effected.
In 2010, there was a huge oil spill near the Gulf of Mexico that we now know as the BP Oil Spill today. The Spill sent about 170 million barrels of crude oil into the Gulf of Mexico. The spill killed 11 men aboard the deep-water Horizon. The BP Oil Spill impacted the environment very negatively. There were different types of environmental impact as a result of the Oil Spill, but the two that grabbed my attention the most are the Polluted Air and the Contaminated Food Chain. The first impact that grabbed my attention was the Polluted Air. Because of the Oil Spill, the air around the surroundings neighborhoods was polluted. All the lightest chemicals in the oil that had spill evaporated within hours of the incidence forming air pollution particles. These particles that are in the air poses significant threats to the human health from being inhaled. The chemical found in the particles that was formed is known as Volatile, which has been known to cause respiratory irritation and central nervous system depression (Solomon & Janssen, 2010). The second impact that grabbed my attention was the contamination of the food chain, specifically the food chain of sea animals that lives near the Gulf of Mexico. Scientists found traces of oil in zooplanktons; this could only mean that the sea creature has had contact with the spilled oil. According to the Staff at Houston Business Journal (2012), “Baby fish and shrimp feed on the tiny, drifting zooplankton, and then introduce contamination and pollution to the larger sea creatures in the food web.” With these findings, it isn’t going to take long before the baby fishes become grown and caught by fishermen and before we know it, it’s on our dinner plate. And here we are eating fishes w...
Besides the accidental spillage affecting severe damage to the environment and then causing harm to humans, there are direct impacts on human health from oil. Problems suc...
Ecosystems are all affected differently by different types of oil. The types of oil spilled in oil spills are: very light oils (jet fuel, gasoline), light oils (diesel, No. 2 fuel oil, light crudes), medium oils (most crude oils), and heavy oils (heavy crude oils, No. 6 fuel oil, bunker C). The very light oils affect the environment the least, as they evaporate within 1-2 days. Although, they still do damage to the environment because of the high concentration of toxic compounds, severely impacting water columns and intertidal resources. No cleanup can be done to eliminate spills of very light oils. Light oils will leave residue after a few days (up to one third of the spill amount). Light oils contain moderate concentrations of toxic compounds and can also damage intertidal resources with long term contamination potential. Cleanup...
Oil provides us with many necessities in our lives. Cosmetics, medicines, cleaning products, asphalt, food, plastic, and most importantly, petroleum. But of course, nothing comes without a price. The oil that makes our lives so much more convenient, is also ironically gradually killing the environment, this very Earth that we live in. One of the biggest environmental concerns come from oil spills. Oil spill is defined as “ the release of a liquid petroleum hydrocarbon into the environment, especially marine areas, due to human activity, and is a form of pollution.” Let’s look at some examples of these oil spills.
Pollution is causing the destruction of environments and habits resulting in many adverse affects. The types of environments that are heavily damaged by pollution is normally freshwater ones. Polluting factors such as untreated sewage, mining waste, acid rain, fertilizers and pesticides

Pollution is so harmful to human beings. Polluted water can cause many kinds of diseases, such as diarrhea, enteritis, and so on. And sometimes the diseases even take man’s life. Dirty air or air-borne garbage causes stinging eyes and running nose. Pollutants are destructive. They will cause runs in stockings and crack rubber tires and they always eat away at stone and rust iron. Time and time again, there are serious accidents that polluted the air. For example, At 1986 there was a bad accident at a nuclear power station in Russia. A cloud of radiation crossed the whole Europe. It is said that 125,000 people died in Russia as a result of illnesses caused by that accident. In 1984 there was an accident at a factory in India and a dangerous cloud gas covered the town of Bhopal. Over 2,500 people were killed that night, and hundreds and thousands of people were injured. Many of the injured lost their sight, and it really dangerous, even in our imagination.
There are lots of environmental issues going on globally. The earth faces problems such as pollution, global warming, waste disposal, and loss of biodiversity. These are just a small amount of issues out of the so many. These environmental problems pose an abundant amount of risk to the health of humans and animals. There needs to be a solution to all these problems and that is by informing others, so that way everyone can make the environment a better place.
