The first word that may appear into a reader's mind when dealing with Robert Frost's "Birches" is remembrance. Every picture in the poem supports the word: the child playing with the Birch, the swinging movements that goes back and forward, the snow painting the trees deeply white. "Birches" is an extremely pictorial poem. Its images are of a profound emotion. There is a fact that can not be omitted: the year 1914, time in which the poem was written; World War I. Though that fact won't be taken much into consideration, so as to make the interpretation in a more personal approach, it is noticeable that by not leaving that year aside, the poem grows beautifully stronger; not only because the remembrance before mentioned takes a deep air of nostalgia, but because the complete image given by the poem also takes another connotation. If a closer look is taken at the artists that were developing in that year, we find Chagall, Juan Gris and John Heartfield, father of the photomontage. These artists usually present in their works, images (sometimes agglomeration of them) that have to be represented by drawing a line between what is actually shown and what is subconsciously implied. With "Birches", Robert Frost proposes a different look when it comes to art. He is giving the focus of aesthetical contemplation back to nature. He is making his readers realize that the pictures he is portraying are due to his concentred observation of what takes him back to his childhood; what takes him out of the world of doom, and what is important, he is revealing those same figures through his poem. If we take a glimpse to "Birches" metric structure, the iambic foot will show itself as the predominate one: When I see Birches bend to left a... ... middle of paper ... ...at age, but on the other hand, there is a sexual tone which is hard not to take into consideration. Sounds inside the poem are highly relevant for the pictures to be conformed. Onomatopoeia is a fine source to complete the pictures or, even more, to fill them with life. We can find examples in verse 8: The Breeze rises... simulating the breeze. Verse 9: Cracks and crazes... simulating the crack. Frost's poem has such a beauty that no one, no matter what his or her cultural background is can avoid. The play with time, nostalgia, fear and hope, plus a strong use of images elevates this poem to an intimate level. This becomes an invitation for ourselves to play with the same euphoria as that kid, to look for our own birches in every corner of our memory, and forget, for a little while, about whatever aches our soul. The poems “Mr. Flood’s Party” written by Edwin Arlington Robinson and “Birches” written by Robert Frost both show the passage of time quite vividly through the use of imagery. Robinson’s words show how the main character, Mr. Eben Flood, is acting one night while being drunk. Frost, on the other hand, is giving the picture of a little boy playing in the branches of a birch tree just as Frost had done in his childhood. The aspect of loneliness is also seen in both poems. Frost’s sentence structure is long and complicated. Many meanings of his poems are not revealed to the reader through first glance, but only after close introspection of the poem. The true meanings contained in Frost’s poems, are usually lessons on life. Frost uses symbolism of nature and incorporates that symbolism into everyday life situations. The speaker in the poems vary, in the poem “The Pasture”, Frost seems to be directly involved in the poem, where as in the poem “While in the Rose Pogonias”, he is a detached observer, viewing and talking about the world’s beauty. Subsequently, the author transfers that beauty over to the beauty of experiences that are achieved through everyday life.
Life and death are two things that we as humans must all face. The road from one to the other, from life to death, is a long and at times, both joyous and painful one. Robert Frost’s poems are a prime example of these times and trials. The poems I chose for this paper highlight them, and with Frost’s allegory, they present a sort of silver lining to the string of dark and dreary words he’s pieced together for these poems. The depressing tone to the poems “Acquainted with the Night”, “Nothing Gold Can Stay”, and “Stopping by the Woods on a Snowing Evening” could be attributed to the death of many of Frost’s family members, and how despite this he overcame it all, and at the end of his life, was a successful writer. These poems to not go into great explanation of the details of Frost’s life, however, I believe that they are representations of the things path that he’s walked, and how he viewed his actions and death in general.

In the poem Birches by Robert Frost, Frost portrays the images of a child growing to adulthood through the symbolism of aging birch trees. Through these images readers are able to see the reality of the real world compared to their carefree childhood. The image of life through tribulation is the main focal point of the poem and the second point of the poem is if one could revert back to the simpler times of childhood. The language of the poem is entirely arranged through images, although it contains some diction it lacks sound devices, metaphors, and similes compared to other published works by Frost.
The simple yet extraordinary emotion of nostalgia has been ingrained in mankind since inception. Every single individual has experienced this intense emotion at one point their life, sometimes even regularly. A feeling of sentimental longing for the past, sometimes referred to as 'looking back on the good old days' are typical of being in a state of nostalgia. Robert Frost demonstrates the natural emotion of nostalgia in his poems “Birches” and “The Road Not Taken”. Although both poems convey the feelings of wistful yearning for the days gone by, each poem addresses different kinds of nostalgia: the longing for a carefree, adventurous childhood of the past and the nostalgic reflection of life choices. Both poems make use of differing poetic structures—in addition to various poetic tools—to create the manifestation of nostalgia within their poems.
The current hypothesis is that one of my genes is a mutated gene, that mutated gene is what is causing my hearing loss. If this is the real reason why I have hearing loss, there is also worry for what other problems does this mutated gene cause. With finding a mutated gene, they will most likely be able to predict how much worse my hearing will get. Another possible but not likely cause is a tumor, currently, I have to get an MRI to make sure that there is no growth inside of my head. If there is a growth, that will lead to some serious issues. The last possible cause is that loud noises have damaged my hearing, but it is even more less likely than a tumor. I am almost never exposed to loud music, concerts, or anything of that nature, which would causes hearing loss. Since I've been losing hearing since I was 5, they have practically ruled that one out because it makes no
Frost’s use of comparisons helps the reader to better interpret the meaning of this poem. The picture created, with his use of imagery allows the reader to view his work from various perspectives. His analogies are very pragmatic. The reader is able to relate to the speaker’s feelings. After reading this poem it gives the reader a sense of understanding why the speaker wished he could go back to his past so much.
Frost was a rural Yankee whose writings reflect everyday experiences-his own experiences, but was one who saw metaphorical dimensions in the everyday things he encountered. These everyday encounters held ground as his subject manner, combined with the rural setting of New England nature, seasons, weather and times of day. Frost’s goal was to write his poetry in such a way that it would cover familiar ground, but in an unfamiliar way or uncommon in expression.
Frost’s nature poetry interconnects the world of the natural and the world of human beings – Both key elements of his motivation in writing poetry. The harsh reality of nature and the thoughtless expectations in the minds of man scarcely cohere to one another. Frost usually starts with an observation in nature, contemplates it and then connects it to some psychological concern (quoted in Thompson). According to Thompson, “His poetic impulse starts with some psychological concern and finds its way to a material embodiment which usually includes a natural scene” (quoted in Thompson).
Frost uses nature as a reflection of human experiences; just like humanity it can have seasons and life cycles. He uses different scenes to depict a certain mood for readers to step into the psychological happening of a man. The idea of how seasons change, Frost compares it through the life cycles that humans encounter. Contrary to popular opinion, I believe that nature is not Frost’s central theme in his poetry; it is about the relationship that man has with nature in which can be seen from “Stopping by Woods on a Snowy Evening”, “The Road Not Taken”, and “An Old Man’s Winter Night.”
