Flying away from poems One of the greatest reggae singers of all time Bob Marley has said “One good thing about music, when it hits you, you feel no pain”. Music can make you feel every emotion. It can make you feel happy then all of a sudden feel sad just by changing the beat. A song has the power to stay in your head forever, but poems are not capable of that power. I think that the song “fly away “ by Lenny Kravitz is more artistic than the poem “ I need to get away “ by Heather Hill because of purpose , end rhyme and tone.

In poems it gives the story a flow. In “ I need to get away” by Heather Hill there is no rhyme scheme. The poem feels choppy and unorganized. Why read a poem when you can listen to a two and a half minute song and feel just as good or even better.’’These days, poetry is institutionalized. Everyone can write it.’’ (Petri). If everyone can soon write poetry everyone will think it is not a special skill. Everyone can not rhyme , but you do not have to rhyme to make a poem. To make a song you have to rhyme and know rhyme schemes. It is harder to write a song than write a poem in my opinion. Not everyone can make a catchy beat or sing well , but most people can write sentences. If you can write sentences you can make a poem. In Heather Hill’s poem “I need to get away” makes the reader feel bad for the author. The author feels depressed and you can tell this because she uses words such as suicide, pain and cry. She states “ I wish i could get away/Find a place other than here” (Hill lines 1-2). She seems to be stressed out or going through something traumatic.While In the song “Fly away” by Lenny Kravitz is more upbeat and adventurous. He uses words like sky, stars and mars to give you the feeling of trips and he really exaggerates how far he would want to go to emphasize the fact he wants to leave that area. In songs they can help you image way more than poems can because of the music.Just scary music can make your heart race. Music and lyrics together can give you some powerful emotions and can make the listener ultimately like music more. Music is so much more powerful and can make your audience feel more emotions. Today, everyone is learning to write poems ,so it will not be special anymore.
