Rohit Sroya Professor Mello English 1B 19 April 2017 Poetry Analysis Essay I have read a few Walt Whitman poems, and common themes among the ones I have read seem to be celebration of individuals, and patriotism. Both of those themes are expressed in his 1860 poem “I Hear America Singing.” This is an eleven-line, single-stanza poem where Whitman talks about hearing the “carols” of everyday America, from mechanics, carpenters, shoemakers, boatmen, and mothers. He says they are “Each singing what belongs to him or her and to none else” (Whitman 882). His tone seems to be one of admiration for those who do this work, and encourages them to take pride in it.
