As a current college student, I have routinely said the Pledge of Allegiance in school for the past twelve years. The pledge, as I recited, included the words, “…under God,” which caused controversy among those honoring the pledge. The Pledge of Allegiance is a patriotic pledge to our country, although my opposers say that by encouraging students to recite the pledge in schools, we are encouraging the belief of God. The pledge is not a religious reading and is only encouraged for the means of establishing patriotism among students. God is mentioned in the pledge because our country’s founding documents such as, The Declaration of Independence and The United Stated Constitution, also mention God as the father of our country. The phrase within the pledge, “…under God,” causes controversy based on the usage of God’s name. The pledge is not intended to be a religious pledge or honoring of God although my opposers say that by including God’s name in the pledge, we are forcing religion upon those who recite the pledge. The Pledge of Allegiance is not the only place that we can find God’s name used in our government. God is mentioned in the Declaration of Independence, the United States Constitution, on currency such as quarters and dollar bills, the official motto of the United States, and in court hearings. If the United States is to remove the phrase, “…under God,” from the Pledge of Allegiance, who is to say that we will not be forced to remove His name from all other forms of legal documentation. If God’s name is removed from all governmental forms, the United States will no longer be the country that our founders once built it to be. God is not mentioned as a religious figure in the Pledge of Allegiance, but instead, He is mentioned because our founders built this nation upon God being the creator of this
