Our Town, a play authored by Thornton Wilder, revolves around the daily lives of the Gibbs and Webb families residing in the small town of Grover’s Corners. The work begins with an average day, progress to the marriage of Emily and George, and concludes with the eventual death of Emily. Thornton Wilder claims that “the play is an attempt to find a value above all price for the smallest events in our daily lives”. The play is able to successfully portray these ideas to the reader throughout the lives of two families living their daily lives in Grover’s Corners.
The plays Romeo and Juliet by William Shakespeare and Our Town by Thornton Wilder are similar in their use of imagination, dramatic technique, and the way town life was used. There is not many props in the play Our Town, so it is up to the viewers to imagine what is happening and how the setting looks. Romeo and Juliet, similar to Our Town, required viewers to imagine the setting as there was no backdrops, no lighting, and little or no props. The theme of Our Town is that people do not truly appreciate the little things in daily life. This theme is displayed throughout the entire play. It starts in the beginning with everybody just going through their daily life, occasionally just brushing stuff off or entirely not doing or appreciating most things. But as you progress through the story you begin to notice and squander on the thought that the people in the play do not care enough about what is truly important. By the end of this play you realize that almost everybody does not care enough for the little things as they should, instead they only worry about the future, incessantly worrying about things to come.
The final example, within the introduction of Grover’s Corners, of the theme of life appreciation appears when the Stage Manager talks about how the Cartwrights are going to build a new bank. He explains that this bank will have a cornerstone serving as a time capsule, which future generations will eventually dig up. He then talks about how modern man knows nothing about how the regular people of Ancient Babylon lived. “So [he’s] going to have a copy of this play [Our Town] put in the cornerstone and the people a thousand years from now’ll know a few simple facts about us -- more than the Treaty of Versailles and the Lindbergh flight” (32). The Stage Manager overtly states that the purpose of Our Town is to serve as memoir of the day-to-day lives of the American people, thus the theme of Our Town makes itself clear. People, future and present, should not only appreciate the momentous achievements of their and others’ lifetimes, but they should treasure the little moments of everyday life. People who thinks of Thornton Wilder primarily in terms of his classic novella “Our Town,” The Bridge of San Luis Rey will seem like quite a switch. For one thing, he has switched countries; instead of middle America, he deals here with Peru. He has switched eras, moving from the twentieth century back to the eighteenth. In a small town like Grover’s Corners everybody knows each other within the town, so there is a deeper connection of companionship, friendship, and love within the town. The residents of Grover’s Corners constantly take time out of their days to connect with each other, whether through idle chat with the milkman or small talk with a neighbor. In the opening scenes of the story the reader gets the impression that the boy lives in the backwash of his city. His symbolic descriptions offer more detail as to what he thinks about his street. The boy says “North Richmond Street, being blind, was a quiet street [it’s houses inhabited with] decent lives within them, gazed at one another with brown imperturbable faces” (Joyce 984). The town square is described as being “between the post office and the bank;” every normal town has these buildings, which are essential for day-to-day functioning. The townspeople also establish a normal, comfortable setting for the story. The children are doing what all typical kids do, playing boisterously and gathering rocks. The woman of the town are doing what all stereotypical females do, “exchang[ing] bits of gossip.” The men are being average males by chatting about boring day-to-day tasks like “planting and rain, tractors and taxes.”

In conclusion, the play represents the collapse of the “American Dream” for a typical lower-middle class family in Brooklyn during an economic depression. The story represents “the brutality of the system toward man” (Kroll). Willy, with his illusions of living the present with the mementos of the past represents the unwanted desire to accept reality. Therefore, he decides to commit suicide in a coward way and leave the insurance money to the family. Moreover, his wife sees the whole process of Willy’s death without interference in order to not hurt his pride. His sons, Biff and Happy, always had a constant pressure to achieve luxuries and comforts of the American Dream and due to that pressure they were unable to attain it. Willy dies believing in a dream that his family did not believe because they were seeing reality a little bite closer than him.
