Through Socrates, Plato explains that the role of the teacher is to instruct, but equally important is the role of the student who is to have the desire to learn and gain knowledge. At first glance it would be difficult to imagine that I could identify any similarities between my twenty-first education and the writings of a Greek philosopher from 380 B.C. However, after contemplating deeply about my educational experience, I believe there is relevance between Plato’s writings in The Republic and my education. For Plato, the desire to learn, or seek the truth, is a person who is facing the sunlight. As I evaluate my own education, I have come to understand that it has taken me many years to turn into the light and become a seeker of knowledge. Prior to high school, I was a reluctant student and I stood with my back to the sun. I did not possess a quest for knowledge or understanding. From the sun, which is the ultimate form, the individual realizes the form of the good is the foundation of all other forms and the basis of all goodness. Truth and exquisiteness of the world and helps an individual reach an understanding, which is the uppermost stage of the cognitive mind. The entire purpose of the allegory of the cave is to move beyond it. The main motivation of the individual is to acquire experience outside of the classroom to get a better idea and image for themselves and to have their own opinion. If one can move beyond the cave and into the light of day then that prisoner can possibly go back into the cave and clarify to the others who are in there what there is beyond the cave. In Plato’s “Allegory of the Cave”, Plato described a group of people that have lived their lives confined to a cave, tied to a pole making them face a wall. On this wall you could only see shadows of what was going on behind you, and from that they misperceived shadows from reality. In their work, Plato and Paulo Freire have offered harsh critiques of education and learning. Plato compares people to prisoners in a cave of darkness in relation to knowledge, and Freire refers to a “Banking Concept” of education in which teachers put their thoughts and information into students’ minds much like the deposition of money into a bank. Instead of this money being of value, Freire and Plato acknowledge that the value declines. Although many people refute the concept of accepting new knowledge and admission of mistakes, I claim that both Plato and Freire produce valid points about the corruption of education because people cannot learn unless they have an open mind and truly desire to learn. My understanding of the cave allegory is someone who has lived his life in confinement; the only life he has ever known. Isolated from the outside world, everything that he experiences is a false reality. He sees things projected on the wall and he thinks they are real, when in fact, they are illusions. Once he is torn away from his environment, he is frightened of what he is now experiencing. As his senses awaken, he begins to see and experience the beauty all around him. In "The Allegory of the Cave," prisoners in a cave are forced to watch shadows as people behind them are forced to accept these shadows as reality -- "To them... the truth would be literally nothing but the shadows of the images. One prisoner, however, is released, and stumbles into the real world, containing more depth and complexity than they had ever known. The pursuit of goodness and of the truth, then, improves the soul, as the soul desires to be elevated to a higher state of knowledge and morality. The basic premise of Plato's allegory of the cave is to depict the nature of the human being, where true reality is hidden, false images and information are perceived as reality. In the allegory Plato tells a story about a man put on a Gnostics path. Prisoners seating in a cave with their legs and necks chained down since childhood, in such way that they cannot move or see each other, only look into the shadows on the wall in front of them; not realizing they have three-dimensional bodies.
