There was a time where plastic surgery a type of reconstructive surgery was mainly performed on abnormal body structures caused by trauma, burns, and defects, with the progression of time, cosmetic surgery, a branch of plastic surgery was introduced. Cosmetic surgery deals with the aesthetic appeal and enhancement of features. Unlike plastic surgery, cosmetic surgery handles the beauty of a person’s appearance rather than medical and health reasons. In recent years, there’s been a drastic increase in patients who are younger than eighteen years up to the age group of twenty-four who are resorting to cosmetic surgery to alter and enhance their appearance. One such patient went through multiple surgeries and she noted that, “But then it was a matter of self-improvement and feeling good. I began eating better and exercising” (qtd in Boyes). This patient’s initial reasons to get cosmetic surgery was to save a relationship but eventually it for her. This is one instance where it might have started out to save a relationship but in the end the surgery had helped her to live a better lifestyle. There are many cases where patients get cosmetic procedures done for all the wrong reasons and these surgeries will not automatically make everyone problems go away. One study followed various individuals aged thirteen to thirty. The test reported with time these participants became more confident and happy with their bodies and self as they became older and reached adulthood. Liposuction, breast augmentation, and rhinoplasty are some of the more popular surgeries for the teens to 24-year-old group. Unfortunately, there are quite some risks especially associated with liposuction and even breast augmentation. “Silicone gel breast implants were approved by the FDA in 2006, but only for women ages 22 and older” (Zuckerman). Many teens mature at a slower rate than others and going under the knife sometimes means interfering with the development. There are many risk associated with cosmetic surgery, liposuction for an instance can result in infections, damage to nerves, blood clots, and worst case scenario can even lead up to death (Zuckerman). Breast augmentation only last up to ten years before it has to be removed or replaced, but there’s a great chance that it could even leak or rupture before the ten year
