If given a chance to revamp your look would you take it? Thanks to celebrities like the Kardashians and shows like Botched, plastic surgery has become more acceptable in our culture. As a medical and surgical specialty, plastic surgery may involve restoring, reconstructing, or the altering of the human body. Plastic surgery is growing in demand, but understanding the types of plastic surgery and dangers is important.

As noted earlier, cosmetic surgery does not require a medical emergency or deformity, as it is purely elective. Individuals who decide to pursue plastic surgery usually do so because of exterior factors or internal factors. According to Wolfgang & Berke (2009) exterior factors can be to enhance to decrease certain ethnic features, complement certain features deemed as attractive by the opposite sex, or to remove the signs of aging. Internal thoughts may drive some individuals' desires to seek cosmetic surgery. For example, persons who are unhappy about their appearance were also depressed; also, the perceived deformity may create emotional anxiety, or they may believe through cosmetic surgery they may appear more powerful, beautiful, and younger. This obsession with the body and a flawed perception of one's body can be attributed to BDD or body dsymphoric disorder (Veale, 2004). BDD is a real issue as dermatologist found that at least 15 percent of their patients have this disorder. Additionally, those who have this disorder, and undergo a cosmetic procedure, at least fifty percent are not happy with the results. These findings are not shocking considering that those who have BDD have a psychological disorder, so a change to the physical body would not alter their perception. Plastic surgery initially started to focus on reconstructive efforts. However, the second speciality, cosmetic surgery has become more popular. Cosmetic surgery, which is an elective procedure, is increasingly popular internationally. As the medical speciality continues to grow, it becomes increasingly accessible to the public. As a result, some patients may have procedures performed in surgical facilities that are not medically prepared and the physician may not be certified to perform the procedure. As more and more individuals seek this elective procedure, it is important to know the complications and possible side effects of this
