Is Plastic and Cosmetic Surgery Good For Teens?
Why are so many teens considering plastic and cosmetic surgery? Do they not know the risks? The rates of teenage plastic cosmetic surgery have gone up in the recent years. There are many bad negatives to getting plastic or cosmetic surgery. Should teens be allowed to receive plastic or cosmetic surgery? Teens should not be allowed to receive plastic or cosmetic surgery to change or enhance their body image because they will face many health problems, it promotes body dysmorphic disorder, and they run the risk of getting addicted to plastic cosmetic surgery.

Mark Tulton wrote in the article Model’s Death Highlights Plastic Surgery Risks” that “liposuction involving large volumes of fat is one of the highest-risk practices. Procedures involving more than six liters of liposuction usually require a blood transfusion” (Tulton 2). This quote demonstrates how high risk plastic or cosmetic surgery is. There are many bad things that can happen during a blood transfusion, which may result in death. Let’s talk about some of the possibilities from getting a blood transfusion and why it may cause death. The possibilities are both non-immune and immune reactions to the blood getting put inside of you, and also infections. One example of an non-immune allergic reaction is fluid overload. Fluid overload is when there is too much fluid in your body, and this can be dangerous to your health. In order to get rid of this doctors will have to give you medicines to increase how many times you urinate. An example of an immune reaction to a blood transfusion is a nonhemolytic fever, this is also the most common. This will cause a fever and chills, but hey on the bright side at least it doesn't destroy your red blood cells. An infection you can get from a blood transfusion is hepatitis B or C, or HIV. Body Dysmorphic Disorder, or BDD for short, is a mentally illness involving obsessive focus on a perceived flaw in appearance. According to Katherine Phillips in Prevalence of BDD “more than five million people to about 7.5 million people in the U.S alone have BDD. BDD is about as common as obsessive compulsive disorder, (OCD), and more than common disorders such as anorexia nervosa and schizophrenia” Katherine lets us know just how many people already have BDD in America. The number is already so high and getting plastic cosmetic surgery will not help those numbers any bit. BDD is already out there and getting plastic cosmetic surgery only makes those numbers higher. Yagana Shah also wrote an article called 4 Good Reasons To Never Get Plastic Surgery. According to Shah “Body Dysmorphic Disorder affects under 5% Americans it affects up to 15% of cosmetic surgery patients” (Shah 1). This quote reveals that if you get plastic or cosmetic surgery you have a risk of getting BDD. It gives us a number of exactly how many people who get plastic or cosmetic surgery are affected. Getting plastic or cosmetic surgery to fix an issue is a way to develop BDD, and it is very real that you may develop BDD. In brief, getting plastic or cosmetic surgery is bad because it furthers your chance of getting BDD because so many Americans already have it so it is not a taboo
