Planned Parenthood Southeast (PPSE) is a member affiliate of Planned Parenthood Federation of America, the oldest and largest voluntary family planning organization in the country. On April 1, 2010, Planned Parenthood of Georgia merged with Planned Parenthood Alabama to become Planned Parenthood Southeast serving Georgia, Alabama and Mississippi. PPSE has extensive experience providing women’s health care, community health education, and public policy advocacy in the Southeast region for over 80 years. We work with national, state and local providers and community agencies to provide high quality health care to over 20,000 clients, and community education programs to over 8,000 participants annually. By combining the Georgia affiliate with the Alabama-Mississippi affiliate, we have created an organization that represents the interests and needs of the region while providing the core mission services in the local communities we serve. This is a trend across the country to strengthen Planned Parenthood organizations and allow us to continue to meet the mission, especially where the need is greatest in areas like the South.
PPSE is governed by a Board of Directors that is comprised of community leaders and supporters. The Board works affirmatively to include diversity among its membership and does not discriminate in the election of its members on the basis of race, color, religion, sex, national origin, age, sexual orientation, disability, income, marital status, or any other dimension of diversity. We have a diverse staff of seventy-five dedicated management, professional and support staff who work in eight health centers in Georgia, Alabama and Mississippi.

In 2009, Planned Parenthood of Georgia received the Planned Parenthood Federation of America (PPFA) President’s Award for Exceptional Commitment. This award is given by the national office to recognize affiliates that provide reproductive health services under difficult and extreme circumstances. It was awarded to the Georgia and Alabama affiliates for their unwavering dedication to provide services in areas of high need to ensure women, families, and young people can access Planned Parenthood’s essential services.
The Susan G. Komen Foundation, a non-profit organization dedicated to eliminating breast cancer, suffered a PR disaster four years ago and has yet to recover from the bad press of this unpopular decision. In 2012, the Susan G. Komen Foundation decided to end their financial support of Planned Parenthood, the nation’s largest provider of family reproductive services (including abortion). This action resulted in an immediate public backlash and ignited a fierce political debate. In the middle of this controversy, the New York Times published an article in which women who had previously participated in the Susan G. Komen cancer walk were asked their opinion of the decision to cut Planned Parenthood funding. The healthcare workforce is suffering critically due to its lack in diversity. As healthcare organizations are growing and the number of patients is increasing, so is the diversity of the patients. There are more minority patients are the number of minorities increase in the United States. The need for minority employees is crucial in that they are needed to help assist patients who have the similar cultural, racial, and ethnic upbringings. There are many barriers in healthcare workforce that are keeping minorities from reaching their full potential to become employees in healthcare, particularly upper-level leadership positions; as patients continue to become more diverse, so does the need of employees.
Dental professionals have a commitment to respect diversity and create equity of access to dental care for everyone (GDC, 2014). Diversity describes any dimension that can be used to differentiate an individual from others. It requires understanding that each individual is unique and accepting and respecting these individual differences (QCC,2013). These differences could be along the dimensions of race, ethnicity, religion, disability, sexual orientation, gender, age, socio-economic status or other ideologies (QCC, 2013). Understanding the impact that these differences may pose is vital in dealing professionally with people from diverse backgrounds and delivering equal treatment for all. Equality refers to identical treatment in dealings quantitates and values (Braveman, and Gruskin, 2003). Thus, creating equality for all might not mean that there are no disparities between different groups. Equity on the other hand refers to fairness and the equality of outcomes and involves recognizing aspects of a system that may disadvantage a certain group and correcting them (Braveman, and Gruskin, 2003). Therefore, in order to overcome potential pitfalls that may create inequity to access, there is a need to explore the different factors encountered in our diverse society that may create these issues. As an example, patients from different ethnic backgrounds may be faced with barriers accounting for the less frequent use of dental care (CQC. 2010). This group will be used as an example and some of the issues behind this inequity of access will be looked at further.

“KP is the largest non-profit health care delivery system in the United States, and operates in 8 states and the District of Columbia. KP is made up of 3 entities: the Kaiser Foundation Health Plan (KFHP), Kaiser Foundation Hospitals (KFH), and the regional Permanente Medical Groups,” (Selevan, Kindermann, Pines, and Fields (2015). According to Andrews and Boyle (2016), having a diverse workforce provides a greater satisfaction among employees, which will result in higher retention of employees as well. By hiring a diverse culture within an organization this increases a workplaces economy and becomes a culturally competent organization. Otherwise, a high turnover can be very costly to an organization and the functionality can decrease. Many organizations have developed policies to help recruit and retain people from different backgrounds. When employees feel that they are valued because of their diversity, the employees will feel protected from discrimination, feel that there is room for advancement within the company, and increase employment retention (Kaplan, Wiley, & Maertz, 2011). With the increase of minorities across the nation, having diversity in nurses and healthcare workers to accommodate this diversity also improves the quality of care to the patients while also increasing their health outcomes and satisfaction (Ayoola, 2013). We have learned in the previous weeks that being able to communicate with our patient’s and understanding their culture can positively increase the outcome of the health. In the 2000 U.S. Census, African Americans accounted for nearly 12.7 percent of the workforce, that number hasn’t increased exponentially today.
