Pike Place Market is the oldest farmer's market in the US. At the turn of the century farmers would bring their vegetables, fruit, milk, dairy, eggs and meat to the city by horse drawn wagons and by ferry from the nearby islands. The goods were purchased by wholesalers, who sold the goods at a commission at warehouses on Western Ave. In this system, farmers occasionally made a profit but increasingly only broke even or lost money. In 1906-1907, the price of produce—onions namely—soared, leaving the farmers none the richer and the citizens angry over the price gouging. The uproar led one local official to try to find a solution. In the summer of 1907, Seattle City Councilman Thomas Revelle proposed the city create a public market place where farmers and consumers could meet directly to sell and buy goods and thereby sidelining the wholesalers. And The Pike Place Market was born. In the 1960's the …show more content…

Local rather than global and small rather than large, the increase in these less conventional manners of production can be seen in the increased abundance of farmers’ markets, Community Supported Agriculture (CSA), and community gardens. Farmers’ markets are common areas where farmers meet on a regular basis and sell various fresh produce directly to the consumers. The number of farmer’s markets between 1994 and 2014 has increased from around 2,000 to 8,000 (ers.usda.gov). Farmer’s offers an aesthetic that Walmart cannot provide—the opportunity to be personable. The consumer is able to see who grew the food, ask how it was grown, and will not be dazzled by fancy packaging or advertisements.
If you’ve never walked through the farmers market, it is a relatively quiet place underneath the banter between shopkeeper and shopkeeper also when shopkeepers practice their sales pitch to the browsing customers. One can only describe the farmers market as a valley of white plastic tables supporting all the goods people bring. Black canopies provide shade for the network of pedestrians and their valuables, but don’t think it will be cool though; even though it’s an open air market there is a greater humidity which make the fruits more susceptible to the pockets of fruit flies/gnats that linger. Products are brought by merchants from around the island, they bring what they sell and sell what they market, once they’ve sold out or have had enough of the day, they pack up and go home and prepare for the next day’s market. There are nine hours of operation at the farmers market and this is important bec...
The main reason why Market Basket became so successful in the first place was because of their policy of always putting the customer first. It all started with Telemachus when he would let customers start a tab so they could get what they needed when they needed. The policy was carried on by his descendant Arthur T, who stated that Market Basket is in “the people business first, the grocery business second.” (Korschun and Welker, 46). Arthur T. would go above and beyond to help people such

I spent my first few hours in Seattle breathing in sea breeze and getting accustomed to the lack of sunshine. Having walked down the waterfront, I halted at the end of the road right in front of the Pike Place Market. Although I'd heard about the iconic market, I had no idea what to expect. From what I'd heard from friends, it's the ultimate destination for all types of fresh produce and oceanic catch.
What is the contrast between a vegetable from the grocery store and the farmers market? Both, the grocery store and the farmers market have a diversity of vegetables at comparable prices. Yet, consumers favor to buy at grocery stores, such as HEB, Kroger, Albertsons, and Walmart. These grocery stores are open every day, making the shopping experience accessible, and convenient for the buyer. Unlike, the farmers market is only accessible once or twice per week. But, the local farmers market is making a comeback across towns and a feud between the two has begun. The Grocery store and the farmers market sell similar produce on the surface, but, the farmers market offers a higher quality of vegetables and promotes the local economy.
I do wish that they had had more vendors that could have displayed a different identity or culture, but I was told that there was usually a barbeque place that showed up and other stands that sold their own respective cultures foods but that it had been a slow week. There is often this perception that farmers markets are for the well off and for those who can afford to spend a good chunk on money for organic produce and artisan cheeses and breads and although I did see some expensive items I didn’t feel that I was being pushed away from vendors and I didn’t feel out of place. When I knew that I was going to attend the farmers market I knew that I would see expensive produce, compared to the supermarket I usually grocery shop at, and I was prepared to see it and I did, but it didn't seem as if the items were so expensive that the average joe couldn't afford them some of the fruits and vegetables were actually cheaper here than at the supermarket and you at least know where the food is coming from if you buy it here.
Summary of Contents Robert Alvarez provides an in depth look at the fruit and vegetable markets and traces precisely their travels from the farm to the produce market. He answers the poignant question as to why the U.S. is the largest importer of Mangos; a fruit that decades ago was literally unheard of in the U.S. He illustrates how the growing demand from transnationals now living in the U.S. began to demand to have the fruits and vegetables that were common in their native communities hoping to replicate their plates from their homelands. This demand has led to the development of markets most notably the Los Angeles Wholesale Terminal and he describes its continued success, largely due to the growing demand from immigrants now living in America.
