Lightning can be defined as a transient, high current electric discharge whose path length is generally measured in kilometers. Lightning occurs when some region of the atmosphere attains an electric charge sufficiently large that the electric fields associated with the charge cause electrical breakdown of the air. However lighting has been reported in snowstorms, sandstorms, in clouds over erupting volcanoes, and been reported to occur in the clear air. Such lightning can take place entirely within a cloud (intra cloud), between two clouds, between cloud and the earth, or between a cloud and the surrounding air.

Supercells tend to be the least common but have the potential to be the most severe. Supercells are isolated from other thunderstorms and can impact area weather from as far away as 32 miles. A squall line is a thunderstorm that forms alongside of a cold front. The squall line contains heavy precipitation, hail, constant lightning, strong straight-line winds, and potentially tornadoes. Strong straight-line winds usually occur when the squall line is in the shape of a bow echo (Wikipedia, 2014). The bow echoes develop within the summer months are commonly known as derechos.
As evening approached, several thunderstorms began to take on the characteristics of a supercell thunderstorm. Supercells, which are intense, broadly rotating thunderstorms, are the most v...
1. According to the USA Today Tornado Information website, a tornado is a "violently rotating column of air in contact with the ground and pendant from a thunderstorm." Therefore, thunderstorms are the first step in the creation of a tornado.
Now, usually lightning represents danger, for instance, when a person has been struck by lightning in a thunderstorm they are often seriously injured or they may even die. However, here the Ad’s creator uses lightning to show off the woman’s strength and power. In doing this the creator shows lightning exuberating from the powerful woman (woman power). While this Ad Proves its point, it’s not realistic because in real life it’s hard to fathom someone creating lightning out of nothing.
Most people growing up have seen the iconic image of Franklin and his son holding the string of a kite while in a thunderstorm. This experiment allowed him to prove the electrical nature of lightening by trapping it in a jar. Another great invention of his was the lightening rod which would allow a building or structure to take a lightening strike and not burn to the ground. The theory behind this invention was to have a pointed metal rod pointed into the air and have a wire attached to it running to the ground. Doing this would allow the electricity from the lightening strike to follow the wire and safely into the ground. These rods are still being utilized today on all types of structures (Chaplin, 2007).
On July 13, 1977 around 8:37 pm, a thunder from the sky, it left a huge arc in the night sky, its feeling like the beginning of a kind of fantasy novel. The West Chester wire was hit by a lightning bolt, New York City and its eastern suburbs stuck up for twenty-five hours darkness. As the alternative power supply failed to the wires at that time, New York City generators were shut down. The whole New York area was in a darkness, around eight million people had no electricity available. New Yorkers were forced to pass a "horrible night".
Imagine going back millions of years just to hunt a dinosaur. Imagine trekking through the jungle and seeing a gigantic thirty-foot tall ten-ton beast. Shooting at it causes the dinosaur to run forward, and a little step off of the Path in fear causes a catastrophe. “A Sound of Thunder” by Ray Bradbury proves that making mistakes can cost you more than you ever imagined. Looking into certain aspects of the story will help to define how mistakes came about, and how to solve them.
An ordinary-single cell is the most common, but multicell and supercells are responsible for the severe thunderstorms. The ordinary single-cell thunderstorms are short lived with three stages: the cumulus, the mature, and the dissipating stages. In the last stage, it eliminates the upward supply of high humidity air needed to maintain a thunderstorm. On the other hand, multicell storms are composed of severe individual single-cell storms that can make storms last for several hours. There is dense, cold air of the downdraft that forms the gust front which forms new cells. Then, groups of these thunderstorms tend to join into larger systems referred to as mesoscale convective
Before any great piano player plays a piece, he warms up. He practices. In a similar sense, so does a thunderstorm. A storm does not start out heavy and powerful; it starts out with a wind. And, the air gets a little cooler; the degrees go down on the thermometer. Powerful thunder vibrates the soul, and the earth is the piano for the persona of the storm.
A study was done to understand the effects of thundersnow within lake effect snow events which took place between 1995 through 2007. What the study observed was that the majority of cloud to ground lightning occurred in lake effect storms during the late fall and early winter months. Twenty-seven percent of storms however occurred between the January through March period. BUFKIT was used in this study to determine the environment that would be required for lightning to occur in these storms. “The presence of the layer from -10 to -25 C within the predicted lake-effect cloud layer (lake-induced LCL to EL analyzed within BUFKIT) appears to be necessary, but not sufficient, condition for CG lightning to occur; values over 500 J/kg of lake induced CAPE much also be present for CG lightning initiation.”
Does a flash at night makes you shut your eyes and cover your ears? I do. I remember a night of restless sleep, with huge a thunderstorm roaring from outside and I was lying on bed with a fever. It was cold, and because of the voice of thunder I couldn’t stay calm. I was scared and as I tried to peek at the window, an intense lightning bolt flashed, and a clash of thunder followed by. I was horrified and felt something humongous must produce thunder like he is mad. Throughout history, many stories and myth serve a common goal to the listeners. The monsters appear in the stories you heard is a way to teach you a lesson or give warning. From what I learned and read in class, monsters tend to be a thing that we created or fear of. To the Native Indians of United States, Thunderbird is a being that use in stories as a way to explain unique natural phenomenon such as lighting, thunder, and storms.
During this short voyage I saw the lightnings playing on the summit of Mount Blanc in the most beautiful figures. The storm appeared to approach rapidly; and, on landing, I ascended a low hill, that I might observe its progress. It advanced; the heavens were clouded, and I soon felt the rain coming slowly in large drops, but its violence quickly increased. (49)
The auroras are the colorful shimmering lights movement on a sky that caused by collisions between electrically charged particles released by the solar wind from the sun and gaseous particles in the earth 's magnetic field and atmosphere. You can see the lights above the magnetic poles of the northern and southern. "Aurora borealis" or "Northern Lights" occur around the northern magnetic pole. On the other hand, auroras that occur around the southern magnetic pole are called "Aurora australis" or "Southern Lights." "Aurora," this word comes from the Roman goddess of dawn. It means you can come to see this phenomenon in the earth at the North Pole and the South Pole.
A solar storm in general consists of three major kinds of solar activities – solar flares, solar proton events (SPE), and coronal mass ejection (CME) (Marusek 2007). These solar activities, sometimes happening together, can affect the Earth in various ways.
Though there is still much to know about the nature of electricity, there is a basic understanding of its essence. As mentioned previously, electricity is a form of energy from the existence of charged particles. To thoroughly understand electricity, it is imperative to first analyze electric force. Coulomb’s law summarizes the electric force between two objects. Coulomb’s law is written as F= k_e (|q_1 ||q_2 |)/r^2 , where ke is 8.9875 x 109 N x m2 /C2. As shown in the equation, the separation distance of the charged particles is on the bottom of the fraction. This means that a greater distance would yield a lower force. Electricity can be classified in two different ways: static electricity or current electricity. In static electricity, there is a transfer of electrons between
