Medicine has advanced immensely over time, allowing doctors and researchers to find cures to the worst of diseases; however, there are still a number of incurable, agonizing diseases. These awful illnesses cause patients to suffer incredibly and be forced onto numerous pain-killing and mind-dulling medications. Patients that are diagnosed with a terminal illness and affected by pain and suffering may request to die through physician-assisted suicide. Although palliative medicines aid pain, it also dulls the patient’s mind, restricting him or her to communicate properly or be themselves. Adversaries of euthanasia will argue that “medical research is essential if medicine is to advance further,” and through the use of euthanasia, it threatens the advances of medicine by changing the focus from curing the condition to killing the individual with the condition. Is it ethical to make an individual suffer through unbearable pain just to advance medical research when he or she would rather die? As it has been mentioned, incurable illnesses are usually accompanied by unbearable anguish. Forcing an individual to sustain life in a terminally ill body is cruel. Patients should have the right to choose life or death, suffering or freedom. Opponents of physician-assisted suicide should have no foundation to believe that the treatment for a disease such as cancer will be discovered in the nearest future, as there have already been decades put into cancer research. There are multiple reasons why keeping a suffering individual alive should be considered immoral. According to the Cancer Facts and Figures, in 2015, there was an estimate of 1,658,370 people who were diagnosed with cancer and 589,430 of those diagnosed with cancer had died (American Cancer Society). Medication evolves every day, yet there is little to do for cancer patients. They can go through various treatments, such as chemotherapy and radiation therapy, however some patients these treatments are unbearable. Doctors prefer to never have to euthanize a patient. It is a contradiction of everything they have been taught for a doctor to euthanize someone, because a doctor’s job is to do everything in their power to keep the patient alive, not assist them in suicide. The debates go back and forth about whether a dying patient has the right to die with the assistance of a physician. Some are against it because of religious and moral reasons. Others are for it because of their compassion and respect for the dying. Physicians are also divided on the issue. They differ where they place the line that separates relief from dying--and killing. For many the main concern with assisted suicide lies with the competence of the terminally ill.
