Physical Therapy
When children are young they are often asked what they want to do when they are older. As children our reply is usually a general occupation like doctor, astronaut, pilot or something else that is common. Many kids who say doctor do not understand how many fields of medicine that are available out there. For someone who enjoys helping others through the difficulties in life, becoming a physical therapist can bring satisfaction and enrichment.
Physical therapists are “highly-educated,licensed health care professionals ” (“APTA”). Even though physical therapy is a highly visible career, most people do not know what a physical therapist ,or pt for short, is or what they do . Some of the benefits of a pt is that they receive “vacation days, sick leave, health and life insurance and saving/pension programs”(“Encyclopedia”), unless self-employed. Physical therapy is the most exciting healthcare profession. Being able to wake up every morning to help other people who have problems with their body is amazing. Physical therapists are members of a health care team, specially trained to improve movement and flinction, relieve pain, and expand movement potential. Through evaluation and individualized treatment programs, physical therapists can both treat existing problems and provide preventive health care for people with a variety of needs (Physical Therapy-Improving 1). Physical therapists are very knowledgeable and skillful concerning the human body. Physical therapy is a complex, but rewarding field to pursue as a career. Specialization, working conditions, job outlook, salaries, and education requirements need to be taken into consideration when contemplating a career as a physical therapist.
The first thing I discovered about a Physical Therapist is what they exactly do. A Physical Therapist is someone who plans, organizes and participates in rehabilitative programs that improve mobility, relieve pain, increase strength, and improve or correct disabling conditions resulting from disease or injuries (MSChoices). This is important because I can see clearly how Physical Therapist has a good affect in a community. Physical Therapist also has to test and measure patient's strength, motor development and function, sensory perception, functional capacity, or respiratory or circulatory
A physical therapist’s role in the recovering of people from injuries is to help rebuild strength and movement in the parts of their bodies that are hurt. Many people who suffer from accidents or become disabled through an illness seek a physical therapist. You might go see a physical therapist if you are an injured athlete looking for rehabilitation, if you are an elderly person to make daily life tasks easier, after surgery to help your recovery, or even from an impairing disease over the long-term. Physical therapy is no new practice; in fact it has been around since around 460 B.C. according to the National Archives and Records Administration. A physical therapist’s priority is to examine your current state of injury and make a treatment plan based off of that. There are many places you will find a practicing physical therapist. They may be found in hospitals, outpatient clinics, in sports, and nursing homes just to name a few. Physical therapists are important in the sports field especially, they help athletes to recover quicker and get them back in the game. According to APTA physical therapists are experiencing amazing employment conditions with just a 0.2% unemployment rate and the employment rate is expected to grow by 39% from 2010 to 2020. To become a physical therapist, one must graduate from an accredited education program and then pass a state-administered exam. A physical therapist may have assistant practicing under them who deliver their treatments to the patients under the supervision of the physical therapist.
Not only is physical therapy beneficial to the patient, it is also a beneficial career path. you are able to work with patients one on one, be with them throughout treatment. Also you know how much of an impact you are making in their lives. Helping people to attain or regain the ability to walk and carry out daily life can lead to a great feeling of personal satisfaction. You are able to choose from a wide range of locations and work settings, including hospitals, private practices, outpatient clinics, home health agencies, schools, sports and fitness facilities, employer settings, and nursing
“With her sweet voice, magical hands, technical precision and absolute determination, Renee put me back together, and I’m golfing again,” states Elyse Wolf, a patient of a physical therapist (Our Equipment). With the help of Wolf’s physical therapist, she was able to golf again. Physical therapists help people recover from injuries and disability health crises. As one prepares for a future in the field of physical therapy, one must consider the job, the educational requirements, the work environment, the wages and benefits, and the potential for the advancement of a physical therapist.
A physical therapist will help an injured or sick person feel better and get their normal body functions back to normal again. A physical therapist will help strengthen the injured part of the patient so that a recurring injury is not likely to happen. They will also help a patient recover after a surgery, stroke, heart attack, or rehabilitate somebody that has had a life threatening event happen. The work environment for a physical therapist is usually in a hospital, although, they can provide home health care services or work in their own building. It is uncommon for a physical therapist to have a office in a physician's office. As of 2015, more than 200 programs to become a physical therapist were offered to obtain a required Doctor
I will probably live in a larger city and that would mean that there would be multiple places to pursue a career in Physical Therapy as there is a wide range of places to work. I would prefer to work in a hospital setting where I would be able to see a mix of patients from children to the elderly. I would also not mind having my own office and working with only one or two other Physical Therapists. If I were to not pursue a career in Physical Therapy I have a few backup options. My first choice would be a Physician Assistant. While it still requires a lot of schooling I believe I would still like to do something involved with people and I believe I would be able to help people with this occupation. That occupation would also allow me to support my family very well. Another occupation I would enjoy doing would be is an orthopedic surgeon. One of the main reasons it is not my number one option is because of all the extra schooling it has compared to Physical Therapy. The bright side is I would be able to easily support my family with that occupation. The last occupation that I would consider would be an allergist. I think I would enjoy being an allergist, because much like a doctor, I would be able to find out why they are suffering their problems, and I would be able to prescribe things to alleviate their
The career I have chose is Physical Therapy(PT). Physical Therapist do many different things, but their main function is to help impaired or physically disabled people enhance their movement and handle their pain. Physical Therapist are a main source in the rehabilitation, medical care and prevention of people with long lasting illnesses or damage. The reason I chose this career is because I love helping people and enjoy seeing people be motivated and succeed at their task. To help someone gain full strength in their limbs or maybe even learn how to walk again is my lifelong dream. It is important to understand the education or training requirements, skills or talents needed, salary and benefits offered, and the duties for a particular career
like in any profession, physical therapy requires extensive schooling and requires many hours of training; therefore, many individuals will become uninterested with the profession. Physical therapy has become such a popular profession that
A physical therapist does a lot of things to help patients get back to what they normally do day to day before an injury. They do this by coming up with plans that helps to reduce pains and help restore movements and make goals for patients. They help by having a hands-on approach and being able to help with exercises and stretches they also massage muscles to help manipulate them to move. They also use different technology to help with anything that deals with the movement or that would restrict movement such as ultrasounds and electrotherapy.
During my undergraduate career, I have been heavily exposed to the field of physical medicine. I have worked as a PT technician for almost a year in an outpatient clinic, and have actively sought out other observation in other physical therapy settings. I have had the chance to observe PTs in acute care at the local hospital and a pediatric therapy center. Through these observation opportunities, I have a gained a great understanding of the role the physical therapist has within society as well as the benefits of participating in physical therapy. Physical therapists are allied health professionals who collaborate with other health care providers to assess, develop and organize a treatment plan to ultimately improve the quality of life for their patients. It is the duty of the physical therapists to create and participate in rehabilitative programs that improve mobility, alleviate pain, increase strength, and enhance or remedy incapacitating conditions resulting from injury or disease. It is crucial that physical therapists have the ability to properly educate individuals on their role and purpose in the patients’ continuum of care. PTs must also inform people about the great benefits of participating in physical therapy. A few benefits of physical therapy include: reducing or eliminating pain, recovering from an injury, improving mobility, avoiding surgery, and managing other health conditions. As a PT technician, I have had the opportunity to understand the purpose and value behind therapeutic modalities, prescribed exercises and manual therapy techniques. Consequently, I have had explain my knowledge of the function and benefits of certain therapy practices to patients. My experiences in different physical therapy settings have given me a strong comprehension of a physical therapists role in
The role of a physical therapist is to treat patients by teaching them different exercises intended to strengthen or stretch muscles as well as alleviate pain. In addition they consult with patients about their symptoms and develop a rehabilitation plan. Often times physical therapists work with patients who have just came out of surgery.
Physical therapists play an integral role in health care. The vision statement for the physical therapy career is: “Transforming society by optimizing movement to improve the human experience”. 1 Through my prior volunteer and work experiences, I discovered that physical therapy was the perfect career choice and vision for my future. As a current student and future physical therapist, I will play an important role for society and within the health care profession. The vision statement will serve as my reminder to always strive for more knowledge and feedback as a student, uphold pertinent values that will improve the practice of physical therapy, and to always provide quality care to all patients.
