Physical therapy is a career that is looked to as one of the most rewarding careers in the world right now. The growth of this profession has benefited as a result from the fitness decade that we are currently thriving in. Regardless this is a career that will continue to prosper and the need for more licensed professionals will increase drastically over the next five years. With that being said I am aware that some students are probably into this career for job security more than anything. As for myself my purpose is clear I want to become a licensed physical therapist. I worked with patients of several diagnoses from traumatic brain injuries, cerebrovascular accidents, wounds, burns, dementia, pediatrics, and many others. From the beginning this setting was not in my plans as I originally preferred an outpatient sports medicine clinic over anything else. However after working at Trustpoint I have been introduced to inpatient rehab and I have to say that this is the most interesting field of physical therapy. I can make a case against any other setting as to why inpatient is the best. Unlike acute care you get to see the patients for a distinct period of time and build a fundamental relationship with them. In contrast to sports medicine at an inpatient setting you will not see the same diagnoses on your case load every day. I have been able to work under the occupational and physical therapists as long as I had a line of sight from a licensed therapist. The therapists would write up treatments for the techs to instruct the patients to perform. This was very helpful because it gave hands on information on how to work with patients of different diagnoses to the point where you almost understand the full effect of the diagnosis. For example if I receive a treatment that lists the patient’s diagnosis as dementia I am aware that I will have to repeat myself a few times. There was only one amazing therapist I got to work under that did not attend Texas Woman’s but he did state that he had a mentor during his residency that was a professor at TWU and taught him everything that he knows now. I believe if you carefully read my references you will see that I have the drive and passion needed for physical therapy but I require the knowledge from a campus like this one to teach me everything I need to
