A person’s identity, as Schwartz, Zamboanga, & Weisskirch (2008) noted is a “critical aspect of psychosocial functioning” as it “encompasses the ways in which people view themselves, and it predicts a number of important psychosocial and relational outcomes.” The seminal work of Erikson (1950) put in context on how people view individual-focused personal identities. Personal identity for Erikson represents an individual’s set of goals, values, and beliefs. These goals, values, and beliefs when taken together form a coherent sense of self (Van Hoof & Raaijmakers, 2002). From my parents’ example, I have learned how put importance on working hard. This core value helped me developed resilience, perseverance, persistence, and determination in everything I do. Working hard has helped me keep moving forward at difficult times and by doing so, I have reaped the rewards. In addition to working hard, responsibility is another important value that my parents demonstrated and I picked up. Being responsible as shown to us means that one must be aware and conscious of the decisions he or she makes while thinking of the greater good as one’s actions may impact others. Responsibility also means being dependable. I very much remember when we were young, there were times that my father would miss some of our school activities because he needs to ensure that things are properly done at his work place as he was given the responsibility. With responsibility comes accountability. My parents exhibited that responsibility must be complemented by accountability.
