In the story The Worn Path by Eudora Welty, the main character Phoenix Jackson portrays a personality of a hero even in the hardest times. She is an African American elder who is a grandmother of a boy who is very sick. He swallowed lye which could have potentially killed the young boy. She decided that she needed to help him and walked along a determined journey into town for the hospital. She went through many obstacles slowing her down and hurting her not only physically but mentally. Phoenix Jackson put herself through so many challenges walking along this path. Welty explains “There she had to creep and crawl, spreading her knees and stretching her fingers like a baby trying to climb the steps. But she talked loudly to herself: she could not let her dress be torn now, so late in the day, and she could not pay for having her arm or leg sawed off if she got caught fast where she was”(Welty). This quote shows her dedication to getting through this mission of hers. The third challenge is when she falls into the ditch and forgets what she's doing following hitting a wild dog with her cane to get it away. “Down there, her senses drifted away. A dream visited her, and she reached her hand up, but nothing reached down and gave her a pull. So she lay there and presently went to talking. "Old woman," she said to herself, "that black dog come up out of the weeds to stall you off, and now there he sitting on his fine tail, smiling at you” is a quote that explains what happened right after she fell into the ditch. At this point Phoenix has already crossed a threshold of leaving the safety of her house and into the path. Now she gets into the town and walks into the building of her doctor. She has to climb the long staircase to get into the room. As an old lady, it is obviously hard for her to do this, especially when she has come such a long way. She eventually forgets why she even came there in the first place. However the nurses help remind her and she got the medicine for her grandson after
