"A phobia is an irrational fear, a kind of anxiety disorder in which the individual has a relentless dread of a situation, living creature, place, or thing (Nordqvist)." Arachnophobia, Acrophobia, and Coulrophobia these are phobias. Arachnophobia is the fear of spiders, acrophobia is the fear of heights, and coulrophobia is the fear of clowns, but why do people have them (Phobias list)? Phobias are not just simple fears they extend from and affect various parts of the brain. Phobias are irrational, involuntary fears that are caused by various reasons that affect many different people. Phobias are quite common. They affect over 50 million people in the United States. As a matter of fact, about 19 million Americans have a simple phobia, about 15 million people have a social anxiety disorder and about 1.8 million have agoraphobia (fear of places that might cause panic, helplessness or embarrassment) (Nordqvist) (Agoraphobia). Most of these people know their fear is irrational, but despite that fact the cannot control their fear. These people usually have a phobia that won't affect their everyday life these usually are simple phobias (Nordqvist). There are two different types of phobias, one type are simple phobias. These phobias usually develop from the ages of four to eight because of a traumatic experience that has happened during these ages and sometimes they go away by the time they are a late teen (Nordqvist)(Causes of Phobias). For example, a child being locked in a small space or in a dark room could cause claustrophobia (fear of small spaces) or Nyctophobia (the fear of darkness) (Fear of Darkness Phobia- Nyctophobia). Another cause of phobias is that a child can basically "learn" the phobia from their guardian (Phobias-Ca... ... middle of paper ... ...hese or just one may help someone with a phobia. Talking therapy may include psychotherapy and counselling. Most medications for phobias might be anti-depressants, tranquillizers, and beta-blockers. People working on ridding themselves of their phobia may have to combine treatments to make their phobia disappear, but in the long run phobias are curable making people's lives easier. (Phobias – Treatments). Phobias affect people in a way different from normal fears. They are caused by traumatic experiences, picking up from a family member, or just been around forever passed down from thousands of years ago. While they are involuntarily formed and may get in the way of life they are curable and can be stopped. Various different people are affected by this irrational, involuntary fear in many ways, but it doesn't make the person's life harder if taken care of properly.
