In his work “A Critique of the Design Argument” Hume asks himself and his main characters whether we can logically discover the nature of God. The three main characters: Demea, Philo, and Cleanthes are representing different sides of the issue. Demea believes that we cannot understand the nature of God, because it is naturally beyond the perception of people. Philo looks on the God’s nature from the philosophically- skeptical point of view. He agrees with Demea that we cannot understand God’s nature, and proves his idea. Cleanthes doesn’t agree with two opponents and finds God’s nature to be possible to understand with the help of reasoning.
In his work “The Argument from Design” Swinburne is telling the parable of the kidnapper with the card-shuffling machine. The kidnapper tells the victim that he would die if any of ten card-shuffling machines will drop any other card except the ace of heart. However, he survives, and finds it to be fantastic, but the kidnapper thinks that it is not extraordinary. Author agrees with the victim and believes that the kidnapper is wrong. The main po...
