In 1999 the film company, Warner Bros., offered Rowling one million dollars in exchange for the movie rights to the Harry Potter books. Chris Columbus was chosen by Warner Bros. to direct the first movie. They then started to search for actors that were perfect for the roles. Robbie Coltrane was casted for the role of Hagrid and Dumbledore was played by Richard Harris. The actors chosen for the three best friends were, Daniel Radcliffe as Harry Potter, Rupert Grint played Ron Weasley, and Emma Watson was casted for Hermione Granger. Filming for Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone began in September of 2000 and ended in April of 2001. The movie finally premiered on November 2, 2001. Rowling published The Casual Vacancy, her first adult fiction book, in 2012. In 2013, it was discovered that Rowling had released a crime novel called The Cuckoo's Calling under the fake name, Robert Galbraith ("J.K. Rowling." Britannica School).

Over 450 million copies of the series have been sold worldwide and translated into more than 55 languages (Kniazkov). Her books were some of the fasted selling books in history, with over five million copies of Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix sold in the first 24 hours of being published (Kniazkov).
