Good afternoon Lord Mayor Graham Quirk, the Board of Brisbane City Council and other formal guests. Thank you for allowing me to speak to you today. Imagine driving to work just like any normal day. As you turn into the highway, a barrage of drivers commuting slow you down, eventually to a snail’s pace. Isn’t it frustrating, knowing these highways are designed to make commuting quicker and easier but instead, adds on average an extra 30+ minutes a day to and from destinations during peak hours? Congestion levels in Brisbane are escalating. There is no denying it. Something has to change. I am proposing to you, the leaders of our great city, to encourage less vehicles on the roads during peak hours. This is essential for the growth of our community by implementing new tactics to combat this monstrous situation. Charging peak hour tolls, encouraging new driving habits and enforcing a revolutionary change in our public transport systems are ways we can improve traffic on our roads and highways. Charging peak hour tolls will significantly change the way Brisbane commute during the week. With almost 2/3 of commuters in Brisbane driving instead of all other modes of transport combined, charging a 1 or 2 dollar fare will free up major roads. This practice occurred …show more content…

The main reason people use vehicles is known as the car effect, described by Italian researchers as people using cars without thinking about the physical, environmental and economic impacts. If the government invests in more regular public transport opportunities, it will revolutionise Brisbane’s congestion problem. Sure, these changes will be bad for Translink, but this will not be the case. With cheaper fares and precise scheduled times for public transport, more people will use these facilities.
