Are you thinking of one day becoming a dog owner? You may be considering getting a dog in the near future or maybe you know someone that is looking to add a furry friend to his or her family now. One of the biggest decisions after deciding on getting a dog is where you should get it.
When you begin your search, you will find there are many places you can get a dog. Pet stores, shelters, rescue groups and breeders are the most popular. I want to tell you why you should adopt a shelter dog rather than buy from a breeder. Adopting a rescue dog you will not only be saving a life, you will save a lot of money and you will be taking a stand again unnecessary, irresponsible breeding.

Before the dogs enter the shelter they are immediately examined by a vet, given their shots, dewormed, given flea & tick treatment, heartworm testing and treatment, spayed or neutered and usually microchipped. Having all this done at a vet would cost you anywhere from $100 to over $500. Most dogs in shelters are passed the puppy stage, which means no more chewing or accidents in the house. This will save you money in having to replace shoes, furniture and carpet. The majority of dogs are brought into shelters because their owners could not take care of them for one reason or another. This means they are usually already know basic commands such as sit, stay and come and are leash trained. Saving you money by not having to hire a trainer. A popular trainer that some of our clients use, Casey Ray, costs up to $1000 to teach such commands. Most dogs at the shelters are mixed breeds which means genetic health problems are lowered significantly. Purebreds are prone to many hereditary conditions due to inbreeding.
