Why Kids Should Be Required to Take Cooking/Nutrition Class Kids nowadays don’t know anything about what they are putting in their body’s and that needs to stop. Kids need to learn what’s good and what’s bad for their bodies by learning nutrition and how to look at the back of whatever they are eating to see what is in the food. By cooking in class and being shown how to prepare a good tasting plus healthy meal. High school kids should be required to take a cooking/nutrition class before graduating, so that most students would change their eating habits and their parents as well. This required class would help so many more families if we could get the kids to have fun in the class and being interested in cooking meals. Josie Ensor states, “It’s also important that they can develop an interest and understanding of good food. By bringing this into the curriculum, we want to encourage children to develop a love of food and cooking that will stay with them as they grow up.” (Ensor) So if Ensor is right then that would be a big advantage to the program because it would help families begin a healthier life style. In the ted talk Jamie Oliver explained “Sadly, in the next 18 minutes when I do our chat, four Americans that are alive will be dead through the food that they eat.” (Oliver) Diet related deaths are a top reason of death in the united states. Jamie Oliver “states diet-related disease is the biggest killer in the United States, right now, here today. This is a global problem. It 's a catastrophe. It 's sweeping the world. England is right behind you, as usual. We all spend so much money on the diet related diseases”. (Oliver) What if these classes don’t help with money being spent on these diseases? Josie Ensor argues that “The NHS spends around £6billion a year on diet-related diseases, which is thought in part to be due to poor levels of knowledge about healthy eating in schools and at home”.
