Some zoo animals and abused and not cared for properly even although some zoos have rehabilitation centres for endangered animals. Should we have zoos where animals are just there for show? Are zoos a part of a solution to conserve biodiversity? The definition of conserving biodiversity is to protect and rehabilitate flora and fauna. This can include taking or placing endangered animals in rehab centres or helping protect them by eliminating some predators tha are a danger to that species.
Zoo animals are abused, not cared for properly and have much smaller lifespans in the zoos, so why are we keeping them in zoos if they aren’t conserving biodiversity?
Animals are usually born in the wild unless they are bred in captivity. When animals are born in captivity and then released a certain amount of years later, they are more vulnerable as they don’t know how to hunt or find food depending on their diet. An example of a zoo/aquarium that focuses mostly on the attraction aspect of it and hasn’t particularly succeeded in taking care of its animals, is Seaworld .The Seaworld in Orlando, America was having troubles with an orca named Tilikum who was misbehaving due to stress from being in captivity and eventually died from a lung infection, which is common for zoo animals, especially for mothers. Another Orca named Kyara in San Antonio, America Seaworld has died due to a bacterial infection as well at three months old. That is now two killer whales in Seaworld that have died due to bacterial infections. Animals in the wild know how to survive and help themselves, they are used to the open space and natural habitat, keeping them in captivity doesn't allow them to practise their natural instincts. They keep them safe from poachers and hunters. In the wild they would be hunted for their fur,meat, tusks and sometimes just for fun. According to ‘In Defense of Animals’, over 200 million animals are reported killed by hunters in the United States every year.40 million animals are killed every year worldwide just for their fur and 84 rhinos were killed in 2008 just in Zimbabwe. In zoos animals are protected against poachers and hunters, by keeping poacher and hunters out, there fore letting their population be able to grow.
Even though zoos try to imitate the natural habitat of each animal, the area for the zoo might not be able to support the animals needed environment. When visiting a zoo many people fail to notice that the animals have living areas measuring an acre or smaller. “Their enclosures are often small, barren, and without shade or privacy” (Laws). “Animals also need to endure dirty living conditions, stagnant water, and hard floors to sleep on at night” (Laws). It’s obvious that in the wild any animal has almost unlimited space to live in. They catch and forage for food naturally and mate naturally.
Animal cruelty is the abuse or failure to care for an animal. Before the past couple of years, people did not have to worry about how the animals in zoos were treated. For centuries, families have gone to zoos to be educated on the different species of animals. As years have gone by, zoos have become a trending topic of animal cruelty. While zoos do not physically abuse the animals, they have been known to not properly care for them. “According to the American Zoo and Aquarium Association (AZA), there are over 10,000 zoos worldwide” (Fravel 2). Of these 10,000 zoos, only some of them actually care about their animals. Caring for wild animals is extremely hard because zoos have to recreate the animals’ natural habitat. Zoos believe that they are protecting the animals’, yet; they tend to forget how it affects the animals. In reality, the animals are depressed and bored. These wild animals are being taken out of their natural habitats and are enclosed in small cages and habitats. Wild animals should live in their natural habitats, the wild, not in a zoo for the entertainment of zoo visitors. Therefore, banning zoos will end the horrible cycle of animal cruelty.
Yet saving the animals does not seem to happen. Yet some animals from larger zoos do not provide for their animals, like the story of Twiggs and Jeffrey, “... two giraffes born at the Cape May County Zoo in New Jersey, were sold by the zoo to a broker who subsequently sold them to a traveling circus. The director... actually admitted to seeing the animals’ pitiful living conditions...”(Zoos). This shows that animals taken in to circuses and smaller zoos can still be mistreated and harmed. This is why American Zoo and Aquarium Association members do not sell animals to smaller zoos any more.

The zoos help animals from going extinct. Zoos are trying to make the animal population grow. The animals will not go away if the zoos are helping the animal. And if we do not help the animal from not going extinct then maybe in the next 10 years they will be gone.

They have evolved past this simple state to become actual habitats for the creatures that inhabit them, not just bars and cages to hold animals captive. The lengthy description of a zoo, as explained by the Oxford Dictionary, is an establishment that prides itself with an array of undomesticated animals kept in cages or fenced up for the public to view (“zoo”). These menageries have been around for ages and are used for a myriad of reasons including entertainment and conservation (Baker). There have been arguments on whether there should be zoo or not. I think that we should have zoos because it’s educational for all ages, also people can see all the different types of animals up close in person that they might not get to ever see in real life. Zoos are even helpful for some of the animals. The endangered animals like the golden frog is endangered in 2007 there was an fungal outbreak that spreaded throughout their habitat which made them extinct in the wild. But, the Zoos in the United States have been breeding them for years hoping that by maintaining genetic diversity in the species, they might eventually be able to reintroduce golden frogs to their native cloud forests in western Panama.

Well that is because of how they are being treated and how much these people that take care of them are not well informed. Zoos are trying to save both locally and globally animals. Zoos are doing everything to fight extinction before its too late. Most importantly, zoos have breeding programs. Some animals are getting extinct such as ferrets, bald eagles, cheetahs, pandas, rhinos, even chimpanzees. In fact, about 1,200 rhinos have been killed in 2014.
Zoos are an unsuitable environment for wild animals and should, therefore, be abolished. Firstly, zoo animals are kept in a very confined area compared to their vast natural habitat. Secondly, breeding programmes are far less successful than zoos claim. Thirdly, zoo animals are exposed to many diseases and other dangers. Zoo animals are usually kept in very cramped enclosures and do not behave like their wild counterparts.
