Sleep is Essential College students should be getting at least 8 hours of sleep each night instead of four or five, because it is good for their health, the ability to focus, and overall appearance. This element can mean different things to different people. The people who think that sleep in not important are usually college students. Most likely everyone can remember a time where they got close to no sleep one night and dragged themselves through the entire next day feeling sluggish and tired. As people become older, it is key to be able to stay healthy and in the best shape the body can be. Sleeping a decent amount every night will help build muscle easier, have clearer skin, and will have fewer headaches. “During delta sleep, the pituitary gland secretes a growth hormone that stimulates tissue repair, allowing muscles to mend” (Street, 2002). It’s odd to think about but “before trading a few extra winks for an early morning run! Your workout will be more beneficial if you're resting enough at night” (Street, 2002). Not getting enough sleep that's needed can cause more skin problems and make people moody. Individuals spend more time and money at the doctor's office because they would become sick from lack of sleep. People who sleep a healthy amount will have fewer problems with depression and anxiety, and overall will become a happier person. The University of Chicago was involved in a study where people who were on a diet and got a good night's sleep lost around 55% more weight, and those who got close to no sleep at all, lost more muscle mass and noticed they were hungrier than usual. Millennial’s have trouble with sleep because of the stress on their backs with classes, sports, living in a dorm, their future etc. Every college students experience is going to be different and that is normal. To correct this issue the millennial can go see a Doctor to see what they can recommend for them to change in their daily routine. Getting more sleep will help everyone become a safer person also. Young adults will make less mistakes in a typical school day and will become more focused and may become more productive instead of thinking about sleep all day. Reported from The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration in 2009, “being tired accounted for the highest number of fatal single-car crashes due to the driver’s performance, any kind of accident is more likely when you're exhausted”. Individuals should never get behind the wheel of any automobile if they are feeling any type of drowsiness, it will always end badly. According to the National Sleep Foundation, “drowsy driving is responsible for 100,000 crashes, and 1,500 deaths every year. Almost 20% of serious injuries in crashes happen when there's a sleepy driver involved which should not be the case”. It’s obvious that if an individual gets more sleep their learning memory will improve. If humans become sleep deprived they will lose focus very easily.
