I strive to be a veterinarian because I love animals and I enjoy taking care of them. Ever since the beginning of the human race there has been veterinary medicine. Agriculture and the domestication of animals began around 3000 B.C. However, there aren’t many records on the failures and successes of the early veterinarians. The early Egyptian, Babylonian, and Hindu civilizations were the first to leave some records of veterinarian medicine. We didn’t first get veterinary hospitals until about 250 B.C. In 1862 the Department of Agriculture (USDA) was created. However, the American Veterinary Medical Association wasn’t found until 1863 after many unsuccessful attempts at organization. “In 1884, another milestone was passed with enactment of the Hatch Act, creating the Bureau of Animal Industry within the Department of Agriculture (Swope 19).” In the last 25 years veterinary medicine has assumed a leading role in the advancement of many researches. Some of them are the advancement of research in the medical use of atomic energy, in diseases common to humans and animals, etc.

Have you ever wondered exactly what all a veterinarian does throughout days? I can assure everyone that the life of a veterinarian is not as easy as it may seem. Veterinarians must care for the sick and healthy animals. Not only must they diagnose problems animals pay be having they must also treat them. Veterinarians also must give preventative medications to animals mainly earlier in animal’s lives but check ups also. Animals, just like humans must have test ran on them if needed or x-rays if needed. When animals are in need of surgery of any kind, veterinarians are the one who perform the surgery with the assistance of their technicians. When animals are having surgery a veterinarian is also the one who must give them their anesthesia for surgeries and they are responsible for waking them up much takes much caution. Not all a veterinarians’ work is hands on. Some of their work is over the phone advising pet owners with information when needed. For example, birthing, feeding, abnormal behaviors, or breeding are all topics a veterinarians may have to assist pet owners with (Chronicles Guidance Publications). Just as a Doctor is to a human, a veterinarian is to an animal. Only animals cannot talk so a veterinarian must be able to observe normal and abnormal animal behaviors. All veterinarians have a list of different tasks that occupy work hours day by day. No day will ever be repeated twice!
Veterinarians uses medicine to diagnose, treat diseases and dysfunction of animals. Medicine used such as antibiotics and vaccines. In one way or another, I have been taking care of animals my entire life. Growing up, I was completely dedicated to animals, caring for what could be considered a mini zoo. Naturally, as a child, I was set on a career as a veterinarian. Like most children, I was naive about the veterinary profession, but I had plenty of people to warn me about its challenges. Albeit initially discouraged from becoming a veterinarian, my search for a meaningful career not only revived my spark for veterinary medicine but also gave me the maturity and experience necessary to succeed in it.
These goals won’t be complete for another four to five years. Becoming a Vet assistant is my biggest long term goal. I have been thinking about becoming a vet assistant or even a full blown large animal vet for about two years now. Along with that I would love to stay in school, go to college and earn as much knowledge as I can. With becoming a vet, I would love to buy an apartment for either my significant other or one of my friends. That way when I’m going to school, I can also save money for a house that I would buy. My goal is to make as much money as I can and spend it on myself and my family. Family is very important to me, so I would keep in mind that I have a loving family behind me and because they helped me and they still would keep helping me, I would repay
For as long as I can remember, my childhood dream has always been wanting to become a veterinarian. While other kids were outside having fun at the playground, I was at the library reading books and learning about the different animals. However, as I matured, I realized that being a veterinarian isn’t just about caring for and assisting injured animals. Being a veterinarian means having the ability to make quick decisions in stressful situations, showing complete dedication and passion to this profession, and being able to effectively communicate to pet owners.
Over the years animals have become more important to humans. They have quickly become a part of the family, and are just as important as any other member. Just like humans, animals can become ill or injured ,and they must see a Veterinarian to help them heal and get well. A vet tech’s job is to assist a vet in caring for sick and injured animals.
