Daunt, 1 Cigarette smoking is the leading cause of deaths in America. “Each year about 480,000 people in the United States die from illnesses related to tobacco use. Smoking cigarettes kills more Americans than alcohol, car accidents, suicide, AIDS, homicide, and illegal drugs combined” (1). Thus, smoking is a dominant cause of deaths and is awfully hazardous. Today, cigarette smoking is really common in younger age groups. Teenagers have this idea that smoking will make you cool and help you fit in. In actuality, that is not the case. Smoking at a young age is the worst thing you can do to your body and is a gateway to other drugs and bad habits. “ 90% of smokers began before the age of 19…About 30% of teen smokers will continue smoking and die early from a smoking-related disease…According to the Surgeon General, teenagers who smoke are 3 times more likely to use alcohol 8 times more likely to smoke marijuana, and 22 times more likely to use cocaine.” (2). The effects of cigarette smoking are relevant but what majority of people fail to realize is that second hand smoke is just as bad. We need authority to push harder to ban cigarettes, and expunge under age smoking. To begin, cigarettes contain many harmful chemicals that are not safe to put in your body. Under age smoking is not cool and is illegal. Teens smoke cigarettes to be labeled as “cool” and to fit the crowd they hang around. Some teens realize the health risks of smoking, but do not care because they are long-term effects. Some objectives they need to consider is their breath, clothes, teeth, nails, cough, wrinkles, and energy. Smoking affects the smell and look of these objectives. No one likes smoky breath and the “chimney” smell!
