“WE MAY NEVER LOSE AGAIN!” That’s just one of my favourite phrases that always comes up whenever our dinos or bluebirds win. The Jays are in the midst of their final games that will determine their playoff dreams. It’s upsetting that they’re even in this position because they would’ve been a show-in for the ALDS banner if the season ended in August. This kind of stuff isn’t new to me though. I’ve seen the ups and downs of the Raptors and Blue Jays, They’ve choked many, many, many times, showing their potential but simply not living up to it. The only logical explanation? The Toronto Sports Curse. The curse that just simply doesn’t allow any Toronto sports team to be successful. The recent success of the Raptors is pretty exciting for the city. As a Raptors fan I’ve got to count my blessings for a certain Degrassi star, Aubrey Graham, also known for his popular stage name, Drake. Drake is the global ambassador of the Raptors and has been a huge part for their marketing team. The whole “WE THE NORTH” slogan, OVO night jerseys, and OVO branded Raptors gear was all possible because of Drake. The Raptors recently made it to the Eastern Conference Finals in the 2016 playoffs, taking 2 wins from the Cleveland Cavaliers, the eventual champions. This was the furthest the organization has ever gone. I …show more content…
I always get caught between cheering for our squads or just staying quiet and frustrated because I’m embarrassed of how they played. I still have a lot of pride but sometimes It’s a little awkward when everyone is annoyed by the recent play. The championship drought in Toronto has gotten so far to the point where we’re relying on good luck and jinxes to lift the curse. There was this one time when the Jays were having a bad losing streak and all of sudden started a mini winning streak after my friends and I started following these rally strategies we found on the internet. We believed it worked until they finally
In 1993, the Toronto Blue Jays went to the World Series as the American League Champion against the National League Champion the Atlanta Braves, the Series opened in Atlanta where Toronto lost their game one of the Series 3-1, faith was not lost as the Jays went on and win the next three games 5-4, 3-2, 2-1. By this time, the fans had real high faith, and even though the Braves dominated the fifth game 7-2, if the Blue Jays win one more the title is theirs, and so it was when the Jays won the sixth game 4-3 winning the 1992 World Series. Canadian Baseball had never been so successful before. When the 1993 season comes, the Blue Jays once again end up first place in their division with a 96-67 record and won all the playoffs games to advance to the World Series for a second time in a row against the National League Champions the Philadelphia Phillies. Th...
The opening pitch of the 1999 marks the start of the Toronto Blue Jays twenty third seasons in the American League. In 1998, the Jays brought in their first winning season since 1993. The Jays plays in the worlds most advanced retractable-roof stadium. It is luxuriously called the Sky Dome. With a winning record like this and a state of the art stadium, the Jays feel their tickets are a great value because of the satisfaction fans can expect to receive from the ball game.
back to the championship and winning it against the cardinals just like before when they beat
During the 2002 season, the Oakland A’s went on a 20 game win streak and finished with the best record in their division. This came after they traded away most of their star players and still found away to win with their low cost players. The A’s had to use statistics to “find players that are very important but not highly valued in the marketplace”. (Lewis) Most people never believed this strategy would ever work and were surprised that it turned out the way it did. Now that the A’s have found a new way to have success with a low budget, other organizations will most likely try to follow this approach in the
Drake was just a kid who didn't stop going after what he was after, says his mother in an interview with MTV. A family member of mine that I had asked about “what is it that you pay attention more in drake's music?” And her reply was “his lyrics on how he would treat a woman so she wouldn't be lonely or hurt by the things he does and just because you lost someone you loved doesn't mean to stop chasing your
Drake, some people may call him the legend of rap music. Drake released his first album in 2006, and he has been dropping songs ever since. Drake released his hit “God’s Plan” earlier this year, and it blew up. What he decided to do after the release was simply amazing. Drake is an influential role model of generosity and charity through his actions of donating to schools funds, donating to Women in poverty, and funding for school programs.
Christopher McCandless’ long, fascinating, but an ultimately fatal journey into the wilderness of Alaska is depicted in the biography, Into the Wild, written by Jon Krakauer. Late in the of summer of 1990, a very young Christopher McCandless left his ordinary world in Annandale, Virginia to pursue a solitary life in the untamed wilds of Alaska. Many will insinuate that Christopher McCandless’ actions were childish and idiotic, but a stronger argument would be that his unconventional thinking and desire to live life on his own terms allowed him to reach self-actualization.
The baseball game is underway. The Rays are losing horrifically against the New York Yankees. They are down 7-0 at the beginning of the 8th inning. The game seems to be coming towards an end, the playoffs seem so far out of reach, and fans are booing and jeering at the players yelling “YOU STINK!” “YOU’RE NOTHING BUT A BUM!” All hope seems lost. My family had no idea how to react to this substantial news we got about our beloved grandfather. I was afraid to lose him and I just couldn’t bear to see him in any sort of pain. But it just got
Entering the 2003 season, the Orlando Magic had no fan support whatsoever. Finishing a mediocre forty-two-win season combined with poor fan relations, the city of Orlando gave the Orlando Magic the proverbial “cold shoulder.” According to ESPN’s “Ultimate Franchise Rankings,” which ranks sports franchises according to several categories including fan relations and fan experience, the Orlando Magic ranked twentieth out of thirty teams. ESPN’s franchise ranking coupled with finishing with a rather depressing attendance figure of 87.8% (ESPN Attendance) capacity made it clear that the Orlando Magic would have to d...
Have you ever wondered how some athletes have gotten so good at a certain sport? Have you ever thought about what they did in order for them to get this good? For some the answer is simple; workout and train. But for others the answer is different; the use of performance enhancing drugs such as steroids. There are some people that argue that steroids should be legalized and allowed in professional sports. Other people argue that steroids should not be allowed. Today I am going to state my opinion and justify my reason. Steroids should not be allowed in professional sports because it can be very dangerous to the athlete’s health, it is a way to gain and un-fair advantage and it can be dangerous in both social and physical aspects.
Imagine dedicating your life to a university not only on the academic level, but also the athletic level. With a full scholarship your time is dedicated to getting to class on time, finishing assignments, and making it to mandatory practices while also maintaining a strict workout schedule. With your day pretty much full of responsibilities, you do not have the time for a job to pay for anything that you may need outside of tuition, books, and housing. If your car breaks down or you run out of gas you have to pay for that out of your own pocket which is fairly difficult when you do not have an income to cover the costs and if you accept money or free services from any businesses, you could lose you eligibility as a NCAA athlete and lose your
Throughout Drake’s musical career, the theme he raps about the most is the male/female relationship. As I referenced it before the relationship between men and women is one of the pillars of rap. His most commercially successful and loved songs are about the relationships he’s had with a woman. Instead of talking about selling drugs or violent lyrics, Drake raps about his love of women and the relationships he has with him. He talks about the mistakes he’s made in the relationship one song in particular “Sooner than Later” he talks about how he has this girl he loves but let’s her get away from him and doesn’t realize it until she’s gone when he raps, “I forgot to call on your birthday/ You swear you’re the last thing on my mind, yeah/ There
I should receive a passing grade in this class because I can write now. Not just an exaggeration, but after another semester of English I finally feel confident that can write. Three of the reasons behind my confidence is I learned, I experienced and best of all I repeated. These three values helped prepare me for what is in store in English 1302 and here is why.
Finally, baseball fans are insanely loyal to the team of their choice. Should the home team's players lose eight in a row, their fans may begin to call them "bums." They may even suggest that the slumping cleanup hitter be sent to the minors or the manager fired. However, such reactions only hide their broken hearts. They still check the sports pages and tune in to get the score. Furthermore, this intense loyalty can make fans dangerous, for anyone who dares to say to a loyal fan that some other team has sharper fielding or a better attitude could risk permanent, physical harm.
Many don’t realize that the road to success isn’t so much a road as it is a winding,
