America is known to people all over the world as the land of opportunity, the land of dreams the land where you can be anything you want. When fate or circumstances beyond your control step in and hands you a bad deal, your dream can quickly fade into a nightmare. Many times individuals are born into a vicious circle of poverty and dependency, where opportunities are limited or non-existent. At other times someone can fall into hard times due to health and/or work status and eventually have no other choice but to seek assistance to make ends meet. For reasons like this our government put together various welfare programs to assist individuals with certain needs.

Some examples of the programs are Unemployment Insurance, Food Stamps, Medicaid, Temporary Assistance to Needy Families (TANF). Although social security benefits help primarily those less privileged with their means of income, it is not the best resource for retirement. What I mean by this is, it is in your best interest no to rely chiefly on social security when you reach your golden years. Retirement should also be compensated by a strategic saving plan for example, 401K, a Roth IRA account, or if you’re lucky enough a pension plan from your employer which is almost now nonexistent. Many people think welfare helps unmotivated, uneducated individuals and only minorities. In fact, more than half of Americans have used or will use some sort of welfare assistance in their lifetime. In recent studies, 35.4% of the U.S. population is on sort of welfare program making this a total of 110,489,000 individuals. This leads to the total spending on welfare annually of $131,900,000,000 and that’s without including food stamps and unemployment. The top three races to use welfare are white recipients 38.8%, black recipients 39.8%, and Hispanic recipients 15.7%. Another interesting fact about welfare is that 39 states in the U.S. where welfare pays more than a $8 per hour job. Including 6 states where welfare pays more than a $12 per hour job.
