Weed is very addicting, do not do it, otherwise your life is in danger! When it comes to the use of marijuana or even the subject of the drug, people will commonly say it is “unhealthy” or “you will get addicted” because of the good feeling it brings to you. People have their own judgements towards marijuana, which usually leads to a bad reputation of causing harmful effects to the human body and mind. She continues on by saying, “Another 2014 study found frequent use by teenagers and young adults causes cognitive decline and decreases IQ. Marijuana essentially fries your brain” (Shapiro). These are just a few viewpoints on marijuana by addressing health and actions made towards young adults.The use of marijuana as Shapiro agrees with President Obama that it is a “bad habit”, but we must ask the question, why are young people using the drug, there must be a reasonable answer to this epidemic? It is no surprise that young adults would be using marijuana, since they would have school as well as receiving assignments and social activities they must attend too like a part-time job, which would be compacted in their day. In a Ted Talk presentation, Judson Brewer discusses, “trigger, behavior, reward” (Brewer 2:38), which is how people get into their habits in their first place. In a simplest term, “feeling stressed out triggers that urge to smoke [marijuana]” (Brewer 3:00), the behavior would be overcoming the stressfulness, and obviously the reward would be feeling good; in contrast, the “prefrontal cortex...it understands that we shouldn’t smoke...it tries it’s hardest to help us change our behavior” (Brewer 4:42), by “using cognition to control our behavior, first part of the brain that goes offline when we get get stressed out...we’re much more likely to do things...even though we know it’s not going to be helpful”(Brewer 5:00). The idea of the brain playing a role towards our addiction counteracts the idea that marijuana itself is addicting. It shows that “17% of those who get high as teenagers will become addicted to marijuana” (Shapiro), were letting their stressful lifestyle overrun their minds and they wanted to find a way out of the negativeness.
