As the years progress, more teens are experiencing sexual activities for the first time. With the lack of proper knowledge surrounding this topic, young adults all over are becoming parents at an early age, or even contracting a threatening disease. School districts need to become more involved in advocating safer ways to go about sex. By incorporating sex education classes within the curriculum, it allows teenagers to learn about it the right way, instead of learning about it around the lunch table with friends. Topics from safe sex, abstinence, teen pregnancy and birth control need to be handled in the proper environment, they spend half their morning so why not include a course they’re interested about. With new outbreaks of sexually transmitted diseases and the fact that sexually active persons are becoming younger, curiosity is going to come over. Experimenting is more than likely to occur but the issue is they don’t know anything about protection. Due to the education system lacking openness around the topic, it leads teenagers to explore and have multiple sex partners at a younger age. Some teens will not understand the emotional regret they might feel after they have sex, but when time goes by the feeling can start to be recognized, either by their unplanned children, or by diseases, the regret can hit with depression or low self-esteem. Not knowing ways to protect themselves is leaving them at a disadvantage. Sex education in public schools for some odd reason has been a debatable issue. During my four years in the public high school system, I cannot recall a health class where I learned in detail about safe sex or abstinence, and what it would feel like once I began having sex. We would briefly discuss sex for a class and that would be it, leaving us to go and figure it out as we matured.
