Texting while driving makes a crash twenty three times more likely to happen (Texting While Driving Statistics). At any given moment, 660,000 drivers are using electronic devices while driving (Brooks). Most people say they would not drive while blindfolded, but when they text and drive it is the same thing. Someone going at sixty five miles per hour for only four to five seconds while driving is equivalent to covering the length of a football field, blindfolded (Brooks). But the problem is not only found in automobile drivers. Train engineers, bus drivers, and truck drivers are also part of the problem. Educating teens, inexperienced drivers, and even experienced drivers about the dangers of texting while driving can help prevent it from happening more than it already does. AT&T came out with a new campaign, "It Can Wait". The campaign encourages people not to text and drive. They are focused on educating the public, especially teens, the dangers of texting while driving. They are mostly focused on texting while driving, but now they also focus on using other smartphone activities. Schools should also have speakers come in and tell their personal stories about the effects of texting while driving. Progressive, State Farm, and Allstate all have a new deal where if you let them install a device, which monitors how fast you go, how hard you brake, and even how fast you turn, they will give you a discount if you are a good driver. According to the New York Times, State Farm issues to customers participating in its Drive Safe and Save program. The company grades drivers (A, B, or C) and assess them in five categories. The five categories are acceleration, deceleration, turns, time of day and speed. The grade the driver receives is then plugged into a formula that determines a discount they will get (Lieber). Also, there are now mobile apps that block incoming texts and calls including "Live2Txt", "TXT Shield" and "AT&T DriveMode". Those apps use a Global Positioning System to monitor the speed of your car and shuts down the phones ability to text (Moreno). Those are some of the ways we can easily prevent texting while driving. Texting while driving is still a growing problem in the United States. If the government takes control and stiffens the laws we have, there could be a decline in accidents. The laws should be the same for every state and not just for the young drivers. Texting while driving affects everyone 's ability to drive safely.
