Using a tanning bed for a nice bronze or prom? Think again. You’re actually helping up your body’s risk of skin cancer by 75% if under the age of 35 (NCSL). The World Health Organization's International Agency of Research on Cancer have declared ultraviolet radiation from artificial sources, such as tanning beds and sun lamps, to be a well known carcinogen (cancer-causing substance) (AAD.org). The federal government needs to further legislate tanning bed exposure by raising the age of usage, limiting the power of the beds and further reduce exposure times.

The American Cancer Society estimates 76,000 new cases and nearly 9,200 deaths from melanoma in 2012. Every state in the country requires tanners to be 18 at the OLDEST. I believe this should be changed for multiple reasons. Although many states let people under the age of 18 tan as well, this should be banned everywhere. I propose a 21 year old requirement for anyone who wishes to tan due to all the horrible risks that follow this activity. Increasing the age will give these users more time to further educate themselves before they make a mistake they cannot undo.
