The Suicide Plan is about assisted suicides, and how most people want to determine how they are going to die. A man mentioned in the video, John Wells was diagnosed with advanced prostate cancer a few months before his suicide, and had always told his loved ones that he would take his own life. His best friend of many years, Hunt Williams, took his friends wishes into consideration, and helped him plan his suicide. Hunt stood there as John put the gun into his mouth and took his own life. Hunt pronounced him dead just seconds after the shot was fired. John believed that after being diagnosed with cancer he didn’t have a reason to live anymore because he didn’t want to suffer through chemo. When a person commits this type of suicide they are not well supported in a social group. They feel like an outsider or a loner and that the only people they have in this world are themselves. They often feel helpless throughout their life. (Durkheim 1987)
2) Altruistic Suicide: This type of suicide happens when their social status is too high. The people that commit this type of suicide are usually involved in a group and the only thing they care about is following the group’s norms and goals and don’t focus on their own needs. They take their lives for a cause. A good example of this would be a suicide bomber (Durkheim 1987)
3) Anomic Suicide: This kind of suicide is related to too low of a degree of regulation. This type of suicide is committed during times of great stress or change. Without regulation, a person cannot set reachable goals and in turn, people get extremely frustrated. Life is too much for them to handle and it becomes meaningless to them.
