I find myself in the window seat, two months later, peering out and seeing the rich green land continue to disappear. I have reached the end of this incredible opportunity of interning abroad. I am an upcoming senior majoring in Psychology that recently transferred to Cal just last year. My transition from a community college to a prestigious university has been difficult, but worth it. The year has flown by and as summer quickly approached I found myself looking at the many study abroad programs that Cal offered. My friends and family highly recommended that I go out and see the world. I had never interned before and I desperately needed something eye catching to put on my resume, so I thought why not work and play. This was all I needed to know and I started the application that same day. I knew that I wouldn’t have a chance like this again, so this was the perfect time to push myself and commit to an application. Although many options were available, my choice of location was fairly easy. There was London, Spain, Canada and others, but as soon as my eyes saw Ireland, I knew. I was born with a green heart that glorified nature. I have always appreciated plants/animals and I yearned to been in an environment that fulfilled my joys of being surrounded by life. Education is a huge topic of controversy, society is always trying to reform what we know as education today. Right now, the first 12 years of education are entirely free for students directly, but in the end are paid for by the taxpayers of the town. The question is, why should only grades k-12 be free why not a college education too? On the other hand, there are some exceptions to free schooling at the k-12 levels. The most prominent being, Private schooling, most towns in the United States have at least one if not many private schools. The United States is one of the leading suppliers of Foreign Aid in the world, and even though the US gives billions, European countries give aid money to the same countries, this causes many areas of the Middle East, Africa, and Asia to be almost fully dependent on foreign aid. This means that without aid from other countries, they would not be able to support themselves at all. Foreign aid is meant to help countries that are struggling with civil unrest, disease, or natural disasters, it is not meant to help keep the country out of debt, but that is where more and more of the US and The EU’s foreign aid budget is going. The question is, does all this money actually go where it is intended? It should be going towards the government and to help the people, but in many cases, the countries government does not have the resources to properly track the flow of money. The countries in most cases have poor infrastructure and corrupt or oppressive leaders, not always at a national level, but in the towns and cities. So this means there is almost no way to oversee the flow of foreign aid through the country, all we can see is that their situations aren't getting any better and the countries are still impoverished. If this is the case, where are the millions of dollars going? Countries like Afghanistan and Iraq receive the most money from American foreign aid and European aid, yet they are still under oppressive governmental rule and there is still an extreme difference between the rich and poor. Community colleges in California should offer two years of free education to students that are responsible. First, by making community college free for two years, struggling low income families can get a two year education at their local community college. By going to a free college people can save money for two years and transfer out to a better college with the money that they have saved. More student will switch from expensive colleges, and come to a less expensive college and acquire their Associate's degree. Next, some of the students will realize that they are going to graduate from an expensive college, and they are going to leave with a diploma and a huge debt in loans. Some people just need an Associate's Degree to get the job that they want and people can get that in two years. For example to become a police officer, people need an Associate's degree, and be twenty one years of age. Last, the crime in the cities will be reduced if community colleges would offer free education. This nation has always prided itself in seeking knowledge. The truth is that for many, it is difficult to obtain a higher education than that of a high school diploma. However, the issue we face is that we are in a time and age that requires our workforce to have the best possible education to have a fighting chance for a decent job. The Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS), the premier government source for information on jobs, shows that only 27 percent of jobs in the U.S. economy currently hold a college degree (associate degree or higher). The education system has been changing in recent years and the same problems that existed continue to get worse as years pass. Problems that were seen as minor at first have now grown. How to change the public higher education system has been a major topic of discussion but there has still been no major action taken. We struggle to figure out how much funding is needed for higher education and where it should come from. Our people continue to suffer from an underfunded high cost system. Illegal immigrants are makers, not takers. Many American citizens see these approximate 11 million illegal immigrants in a negative view and don’t want them living in their communities. However, many of these American citizens don’t know why illegal immigrants come here and what good they actually do to this country. Illegal immigration should be allowed because their quality of life is improved, they help the economy, and they bring job growth.
Imagine entering into a new country with no say, and having little to no knowledge on the culture, people, or language. Some kids are brought at such a young age that they are able to grasp what is taught easier, but others are brought at an older age where it becomes difficult to learn a whole new language and culture. Most manage to overcome these obstacles and at times are awarded valedictorian in their class. Sadly, when the time comes to follow their educational paths these students are turned down because of their immigration status. I not only have friends and family members who have gone through such unfortunate events, but I myself am currently living through this situation. This is why I believe that all college students should have the same benefits regardless of citizenship status because it will let more kids pursue an education path, will help increase graduation rates, and will facilitate economic growth.
College education goes about the way to an effective future for people who are not kidding with it. Currently, a college education has turned in the base necessity in securing a job in different companies and although some people might think college is not worth the debt, in a long run it actually is.

Students should have a balance of street smarts and book smarts so they can be successful in whichever career they may choose. If the typical education focuses on teaching the students only certain areas they may or may not use, then how will the students be completely prepare for life? If education is supposed to prepare students for life, then can anyone really limit or define education? When I come back from study abroad I want to promote the experience with everyone. If anyone asks me about my program or my host country I will gladly answer any questions they might have. I would want to participate in the Study Abroad Fair and represent the program I was apart of. Since I took an internship I will have experience getting a VISA and have an understanding of how my host university’s program works. I can be an advisor for students looking for any guidance on their journey to St. Mary’s. My experience could easily be presented for anyone looking into my program and I could provide information on the best ways to budget yourself while in London. International students face many different challenges when studying abroad. This is due to many factors. First they are living in a country very far away from their own. The country they are studying in also has a very different way of life than theirs. Also the laws in foreign country are much different than the laws in their own country. Due to that they face a lot of problems trying to adapt to this new culture. Me personally as an international student in the US studying in ASU have faced three particularly difficult challenges that I was able to overcome through time. In this essay I will explain how international students can overcome tough challenges and situations.

Going into college everyone expects us to know what we want to do with the rest of our life. That is a huge decision to make after living only 18 years. As teenagers we can’t decide what we want to where the next day, how are we supposed to choose what we will do for the rest of our lives? With the average cost of college ranging between $8,500 for a four-year public college and $29,000 for a four-year private college per year. (College Board) Can college students afford to make the wrong decision? Shocking facts reveal that around 75 percent students will switch majors from the time they start college till their graduation day.( Freedman) This just adds more money on to the two words no one wants to hear, “Student loans.” When we finally get to graduation the excitement is short-lived with the way the economy is going now. A college degree may not be enough to land a job that will pay the bills and 6 months later we start to get the bills for that degree.
