Standardized Testing
The topic of debate that goes on in many schools is the issue of standardized testing. Some say it’s not a good assessment to have while others believe it is beneficial to students, teachers, and the school district. So, what is standardized testing? It’s a form of testing where all test takers must answer the same questions with the same answers. This makes it possible to compare the performance of each individual student. In this essay we will cover the history of standardized testing, and some statistics on it. I will then discuss my own personal opinion on the subject.
History
Standardized testing has been around for many centuries. It was developed to check each individual student’s knowledge, and proficiency. “The use of standardized testing became more common during World War II and the Cold War” (Longo, 2010). These tests would determine a student’s placement, and advancement for their next level of education. Title I of the Elementary and Secondary Education Act of 1965 was the next major event of standardized testing. Not all methods of evaluation work as well as these tests. “Researchers Starch and Elliott (1912) made copies of two actual English examinations and sent them to teachers to grade…marks ranged from 50 to 98 percent” (Phelps, 2008). This research project proved not all teachers grade the same way. The graded exams were unacceptable for some teachers, but excellent to others. “One hundred years’ evidence suggests that testing increases achievement” (Phelps, 2012). Ever since standardized testing was developed it has mostly had a good impact on students learning.
