Smoking cessation is the process of terminating the practice of smoking tobacco (Medical Dictionary, 1998). For the uninitiated, it is a seemingly straightforward task, albeit for an average smoker, it is easier said than done. In this day and age one need not look any further than colleagues, acquaintances, friends or even family members who have succumbed to smoking and see how much of a struggle it is in the event that a smoker opts to quit, with some succeeding where most would fail in the attempt. This is not surprising considering that cigarettes contain high levels of nicotine (Taghavi et al., 2012), a main component of tobacco, which can be just as addictive as heroin or cocaine, hence making smoking cessation exceptionally difficult. …show more content…
Coronary heart disease, stroke, respiratory illnesses, blindness and cancers, especially lung cancer, are on top of the list of diseases associated with smoking. Quitting smoking cuts cardiovascular risks (Benjamin, 2011). The Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC, 2014) claims that just one year after quitting smoking, the risk for a heart attack drops sharply and within two to five years after quitting smoking, the risk for stroke could fall to about the same as a nonsmoker’s …show more content…

Smoking is the leading cause of preventable death in the United States and worldwide (Centers for Disease Control, 2013, World Health Organization, 2008). Tobacco cessation counseling is a vital component of any public health strategy seeking to decrease mortality, disease and costs associated with smoking. To that end, the Healthy People 2020 Tobacco Use Objectives cover three main areas: reducing tobacco use, instituting health system changes, and creating social and environmental changes (U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, 2013). Objective TU-10 falls under the category of health system changes as it seeks to open doors for patients to make quit attempts and to pursue tobacco cessation methods by increasing tobacco cessation counseling by physicians and other health care providers.

The prevalent use of tobacco products among Americans is an important issue that should be brought to the surface. This issue should be raised because many of the diseases and illnesses associated with tobacco use are preventable. Despite information about the bad side effects of smoking on health, 25% of adults in the United States keep on smoking. One of the reason why people seems to not easily quit smoking and continue to do it has to do with the addictive nicotine, a substance found in all types of tobacco products.
Smoking cigarettes is a detrimental practice not only to the smoker, but also to everyone around the smoker. According to an article from the American Lung Association, “Health Effects” (n.d.), “Smoking is the leading cause of preventable death in the U.S., causing over 438,000 deaths per year”. The umbrella term for tobacco use includes the use of cigarettes, cigars, e-cigs and chewing tobacco. While tobacco causes adverse health consequences, it also has been a unifying factor for change in public health. In other words, people who smoke should quit not only for their health, but for the health of their loved ones and the people around when they smoke, especially for that of children. We now know that when a person smokes, you’re inhaling life-threatening chemicals, and you’re damaging your internal organs. In addition, smoking leads to wrinkles, teeth falling out, along with other gruesome consequences that eventually lead to death. Cigarette makers know that nicotine addiction helps sell their products. Nicotine is the main ingredient in tobacco that causes addiction. Feeling and pleasure are the two parts of the brain that are triggered by nicotine use. It only takes minutes for the effects of nicotine to wear off. This causes the smoker to take another puff to keep feeling good. (Junior Scholastic, 2006) When tobacco products are used nicotine is quickly absorbed into your blood stream. Within seconds it enters the brain causing the brain to release adrenaline, which in return causes a buzz of pleasure and energy. The feeling quickly fades and leaves the user feeling tired, down and craving that feeling of pleasure once more. This could result in the individual lighting up another cigarette due to the fact that the body has built up such as high tolerance to nicotine. This cycle will only continue to repeat resulting in addiction. Although for many once they’ve reached this point it seems almost impossible to quit smoking even when they want to. It’s not that easy to quit smoking cigarettes, it can be very hard especially for many people who have been smoking for years. Many people are addicted to this drug because of the nicotine that’s in the tobacco, which is very addictive. Nicotine is the most common word that most smokers use and is there excuse why they can’t stop saying “it’s so addicting”. Like heroin or other addictive drugs, the body and mind quickly become so used to the nicotine in cigarettes that a person needs to have it just to feel normal (Smoking). Nicotine is the main addictive ingredient in a cigarette that activates synthesis of a chemical called dopamine in the brain (Naturstopp). This is just one of the chemicals that are in a cigarette, there are over 599 more chemicals that are in a cigarette. To name a few there is acetone, ammonia, tar, benzene, cadmium, hydrogen cyanide, carbon monoxide, and nitrogen oxides etc (Naturstopp). Some of these chemicals might not seem harmful, but it’s the burning of these chemicals that produce toxic and carcinogenic compounds more than 4000 of them (Naturstopp). Smoking cigarettes can be devastating; especially with each inhale you exhale.
Consequently, tobacco which contains many harmful chemicals damages human beings’ health day by day. Although people are aware of the bad effects of smoking, they still smoke for one reason or another. When the current situation is considered, it is clear that smoking which has been spreading all over the world is not only the problem of a country or a territory but the problem of mankind because smoking brings many disadvantages for humans like diseases. I personally believe that it is important to help children remain lifelong non-smokers because they are our hope for a non-smoking future.
