The most recent law passed in Western Australia promotes and consents the murder of sharks in what is considered the boundary of "kill zones". “Localised shark mitigation strategy” (Reed 2015) was created because of 7 fatal shark attacks in Western Australia since 2010. The government created baited drum lines to catch sharks off beaches last summer with the intent of killing any shark longer than 3 meters and releasing any other, dead or alive. Fifty- one tiger sharks had been killed by the end of the first season. This law is morally corrupt because it eliminates sharks as a key food chain element in the ocean causing detrimental consequences for their removal, it disregards the pre existing mortality rates for various types of sharks endangering them, and also holds no remorse for murder while disregarding conservation of oceanic wildlife and the kings of the open sea, sharks. …show more content…

These apex predators remove weaker members of other species in order to maintain overall oceanic ecosystem health. Without sharks our seas would become overpopulated and the balance of the food chain would collapse out of balance. All sharks prey on the sick and the weak members of the population. Some sharks scavenge the sea floor to feed on dead carcass to prevent the spread of disease and outbreaks that could be devastating. It is said that “Sharks are vulnerable to exploitation and recovery can take decades” (Reed 2015). The reality proves heartbreaking as sharks are predicted to go extinct within the next few years at this rate. Not only are these creatures an important asset to our ecosystems, but they are also beautiful creations that shared time on this earth with dinosaurs and should not end because of us.
