College seems to be a vital part of our lives. We consider ourselves fortunate if we have the opportunity to go to college because most people cannot afford to do so; either they lack motivation or they lack money. We pay extreme amounts of money to live in the dorm and on campus, which is supposedly “safe”. Is it really safe though? Most schools, unfortunately, are not safe, people can even come in and leave without any identification. If this is what we are paying for to be “safe”, should we be actually paying? The unfortunate truth is that we are not safe anywhere on campus, especially girls (New York Times 1). Men being raped seems to be a more uncommon issue because it does not happen as often (Rainn 1). However, it is a huge issue now because people are unaware of the fact that this issue exist in the world today. We have certain expectations from certain genders. Men are supposed to be extremely strong so people find it is hard to believe that men get raped as well. If taken a look percentage wise, only about 3 % of the men get raped however if put in numbers, it is 2.78 million men are victims of rape (Rainn 1). Therefore, this issue needs closer attention now. Male and female rape cases both need our attention because rape in general is a major issue now. However, female rape cases get more sympathy and coverage because it is more common (Rainn 1). One of the biggest factor as to why it is easier for people to understand females being the victim of rape more than males being the victim is because females are considered feeble. China’s population is 1357 million with GDP per capita is 7,808 dollars (Focuseconomics 1). Whereas in the United States of America, the population is 328 million (Worldometers 1) with per capita of 17,419 Dollars (Trading Economics 1). As you can see the population to GDP is almost the same in both the countries. It makes sense because USA has a little bit of more population therefore, they have a higher GDP, however, the ratio discrepancy is lot lower and seems to be around the same (Trading Economics 1). However, China comes from a very conservative culture whereas America is very liberal. Chinese court of justice said that “women who smoke, drink and dress provocatively are more likely to be raped” (Denyer 1). They are suggesting that girls should be more responsible about the situation while they are not pointing any fingers at the male population. Girls need to understand they are unsafe and it is not up to the Chinese court of justice to deal with the safety of the girls. Whereas, President Barrack Obama said that it is their utmost responsibility to serve justice to the girls who have been victims of rape (Somanader 1). Such contrast in the perspectives of issues create such gap for girls in this nation. There should be no justification as to why girls are treated differently in different parts of the world.
