Everyone has had their own personal stories of the times that they have been bullied; this could be anywhere from being bullied by their siblings to being bullied at school for things that they do or how they look. In school now, children from the ages of 5 all the way up until they are 18 or older are getting bullied for the ways that they look. Children all throughout school had dreamt of the day where they could just take their defected body part off and just switch it with a new “normal” body part. Most children do not know that there are doctors out there who can either remove undesirable body parts, or replace and enhance those body parts. There are thousands of people each year just in the United States that undergo cosmetic and plastic …show more content…
According to “Plastic Surgery for Teenagers” in the year 2013, there were 219,564 teenagers that had plastic or cosmetic surgery done which is an increase of almost 15,000 from the year 2009. Overall, for any procedure that is done, whether it is big or small, parents must give their consent in order for teenagers to have a procedure done. “If they are underage, they must convince their parents to give consent and, even if they are not underage, to give financial assistance. But sometimes it is the other way around… they think is in the child 's best interest” (Gilbert par. 6). Whether or not the child is in favor of the operation, ultimately it is up to their parents to decide whether they have the operation …show more content…
Plastic and cosmetic surgery can be used to help these people that feel bad for themselves feel much better making their lives that much easier. With younger patients, “plastic surgery can shape the nose, reset the ears, and balance the chest, so that teens can focus on school, sports, socializing, and fun ... These procedures help boost confidence during these critical years of development (Essig 178).” When children are going to school, the last thing that they need to have to worry is someone bullying them over their physical appearance that they have nothing to do with. With the help of cosmetic and plastic surgery children, teenagers, and young adults don’t have to worry about being bullied when going to school or going out they would be able to focus more on their curriculum or being able to live a happy
...hese days and is no longer accessible only to the rich and famous. Any person in the world can have the procedure they want done. Men, women and parents of small children are making the decision things about their bodies and looks each day. Plastic surgery can improve a person’s self esteem or can drastically change the life of a child or adult with deformities. No matter what the reason may be, plastic surgery is not something that is to be entered into lightly. It requires a long thought process, a search for a good and credible practitioner, support from loved ones, possible therapy and of course, a lot of money. The decision to undergo cosmetic or reconstructive surgery is intensely personal. People, for reasons as simple as a crooked nose, to the lessening of a serious scar, to those deformed by birth, accidents or injury have options available to them.
Reader! It has come to my attention that the human world has been thrown into major conflicts surrounding the ethics of restoring the function of the face, using microsurgery, to those with severe disfigurements (Lamparello). This revolution of the science that led to my creation has almost rendered me speechless! No longer will patients feel hideous in their own skin because of unforeseen circumstances. Oh, how it is a horrid life to live, to be unaccepted by your fellow man, no matter how much YOU try and assimilate! Facial reconstruction is an innovative process that can improve the self-confidence of those whom were born naturally disfigured or were disfigured later in their lifetime. Face transplantation implores my interest simply because of how close it pounds at my wretched heart. When I escaped to a land far from the accursed laboratory I was “born” in, I found documents belonging to my creator that detailed his disgusted thoughts during my creation and final “birth”. It was exceptionally difficult to study his horror-stricken account of my hideous appearance (Shelley 34). When he’d lain his eyes on his obsession for the first time, he promptly disregarded his previous claims of my
According to the article “ The History Of Plastic Surgery” by The American Society of Plastic Surgeons, plastic surgery began in ancient India where it was used to heal those who suffer from facial injuries. In the 20th century plastic surgery helped soldiers from the World War I and World War II reform their faces. However, after war, most people started looking for ways to ameliorate their looks and improve their physique and their only choice was cosmetic surgery. In today’s society, a teenager tends to be exposed to a lot of peer pressure that pushes him/her to hate his/her own body and makes him/her forget the importance of natural beauty. Dr. Ned Hallowell, a child psychiatrist, clearly supports the writers thesis by saying, on ABC news, that Plastic Surgery to avoid bullying and peer pressure is a bad idea “The idea of someone getting plastic surgery to avoid bullying seems to me as crazy and worrisome as if a black person were to go to a doctor and say, 'I want to become white...
The media has had an increasingly destructive effect on young people who are becoming worryingly obsessed with their body image. The media is saturated in sexual imagery in which young people have to face every day. The sheer volume of sexual imagery in the media today has resulted in the vast majority of young people to become hooked on looking as near to perfection everyday by using the latest products and buying the latest fashions. This used to be enough but lately the next step to achieving perfection is cosmetic surgery. Everyone wants to look attractive, especially teenagers who are not only put under massive strain to succeed but to look beautiful and climb the ranks of the social ladder, and it seems that the only way to achieve the much desired beauty is to turn to drastic measures.
She could go on fad diets or constantly exercise but still won’t be satisfied with her body. It’s not just about having a model type body. She might not think she has enough curves or that her nose is too misshapen. With that being said, this influences the likelihood of changing one’s own appearance. Because of this, it is no surprise that cosmetic surgery is on the rise with teens. Many will argue that physically altering one’s body during adolescence has too many risks involved. Teenagers might not be fully committed to a procedure, might be prone to infection or just simply are not physically ready for surgery. Others will argue that plastic surgery is a personal choice, and as long as parental consent is given then it is the individual 's decision to do so. Although everyone has the right to do as they wish with their body, teenagers are not mentally and physically prepared for plastic surgery and should not undergo a procedure unless it is for reconstructive
Ideally cosmetic surgery was considered a procedure that adults underwent, but as time goes on younger adults are becoming candidates for cosmetic surgery. The primary reason behind this younger generation turning to cosmetic surgery is because they are dissatisfied with their body, and or weight. Often young girls are teased, and as a result their self-esteem is affected. Many turn to cosmetic surgery with the hopes of making themselves acceptable in the sight of their peers. Younger generations of women who make the decision to have cosmetic surgery performed tend to want to have breast augmentations, and buttock implants. A huge influencing factor that leads younger women to seek these type of cosmetic surgeries are related to music videos,
Plastic surgery is not a new field of medicine. Traditionally, plastic surgery dealt with fixing abnormalities of the body, but recently people are enjoying the luxury of plastic surgery simply because they are not happy with their appearance. People make appointments with plastic surgeons for procedures such as rhinoplasty, liposuction, tummy tucks, face lifts, and most commonly breast augmentation. These people look forward to desired results from such procedures without considering the risks. Many risks accompany plastic surgery, but they are rarely discussed in the media. Death is even a possible conclusion of the surgery. Why would people subject themselves to such conditions as having their face swollen for weeks, barely being able to walk, and the excruciating pain that comes after they awaken from surgery? Even more important is the question, why are teenagers becoming more and more eager to get plastic surgery operations performed on themselves?
In conclusion, the benefits of cosmetic surgery differ between people and situations; any negative thoughts of others may have an effect on a person’s decision to have a procedure done, but it is for the patient to decide if changing their body is the right decision for them. Regardless of the influences on the younger generation, unrealistic ideologies of patients, and moral issues others may have, plastic surgery will continue to be a huge part of society. However, society should be focusing on how to encourage others to seek happiness in whatever they seem fit, rather than choose to destroy the aspirations of others who choose to build a perfect body for
A person doesn’t have to go through an experience such as bullying, weight loss or an accident to undergo modification surgery. Plastic surgery is a trend that has many people on the tips of their toes but honestly plastic surgery is a good thing. A person should feel good about him or herself on the inside and out no matter what they look like. It does receive a bad connotation because some people do it for the wrong reasons. Undergoing surgery for those who have been bullied or teased can alleviate those harsh memories of being tormented in their younger years. Body contouring after weight loss gives the person who lost all the weight truly feel that they succeeded in something that a lot of people struggle to do. Having the same appearance again due to surgery after a horrible accident can improve a person life tremendously. Reconstructive surgery was created for the reason to improve and modify different areas of the body where people are
The purpose of cosmetic surgery in adolescents is to enhance their appearance by altering a displeasing physical feature through surgery. While first looked down upon with alarm, as technology and greater understanding spread, it became more widely accepted and the number of procedures tripled and even quadrupled within fifteen years. (American Society of Plastic Surgeons, 2011) Cosmetic surgery on adolescents has been ...
Men had nearly 1.1 million cosmetic procedures, 13 percent of the total (up from 12 percent of the total in 2002). The number of cosmetic procedures for men increased 31 percent from 2002.
Cosmetic Surgery is a great discovery that has been around for many centuries. “The history of plastic surgery origins in the early 800 B.C. when surgeons in India restored noses to persons who had them taken off as a form of punishment.” (History of Cosmetic Surgery, 2008) Many people have used over the years cosmetic and reconstructive surgery to enhance their physical appearance weather it be for health problems associated with birth defect or problems that they have developed over the years or to even alter physical appearances for instance nose jobs and tummy tucks. There are numerous types of cosmetic surgery that can be done today in the United States, over the year’s surgeons techniques have improved dramatically. There are a number of pro’s and con’s that go along with cosmetic surgery, such as the amount of recovery time and the initial cost of surgery. In 1914, the world was at war. Thousands of soldiers were constantly rushed into hospitals. The new weapons such as the machine gun left them heavily wounded and in desperate need of surgery (History of Plastic Surgery 2,3). Even though the treatment provided was not as efficient as it is today, it saved a significant number of lives. Ever since then, the industry of plastic surgery has been on the rise. As this medical procedure improved with the advances made in the sciences and technology, it evolved to serve an additional goal. While performed for reconstructive purposes a hundred years ago, plastic surgery is presently used to enhance one’s physical appearance as well. From fat reduction to breast augmentation, it is now within human capacity
