Every year, approximately 300,000 people die from an illness related to being overweight and obese (Carmona). This is a preventable disease but has been enabled primarily by fast food franchises and lifestyle choices. People like to take the easy options, and lately, that has been with food, because these foods are so heavily processed they are cheaper and thus people buy more. Recently, obesity has been declared a disease and now will be able to help people in a new way. If those that suffer from obesity are legally obligated to seek medical attention, then there would be a decrease in obesity rates.

So when you get a meal from a fast food franchise it will contain the recommended amount of calories from the whole day! Now imagine eating that about twice a day, every day of the week; that will lead to a major weight gain. In addition, when food gets cheaper to the portion sizes get larger which means more calories and larger stomachs. What was once a large size is now a small, compared to other countries the US has the largest portion sizes and the highest obesity rate. Furthermore, many people chose to rely on fast food to feed not only themselves, but their families as well since it is a cheap, easy option that is on the way home from work. This makes people lazy and not want to make home cooked healthy meals for their families. Obesity fits the definition of a disease since it is an impairment to some aspect of normal body function, has signs and symptoms, and causes harm and/or death to those effected (“Disease of Obesity”). This is similar to other diseases that a treated with medication and other methods. Since there has been a change in the way obesity is being viewed researches are now looking at what things can cause obesity, such as hormone imbalances, neurotransmitter deficiencies, and nutritional exhaustion (“Is obesity a disease?”). These symptoms have been linked with weight gain and are treatable with the right approach. Moreover, another symptom that has been linked to obesity is dysregulation of eating and is also an environmental reaction. Meaning that we have the ability to eat whatever we want, whenever which leads the mind to think that it is hungry whenever your body is actually fine. It is hard for people to eat on a schedule, since our lives are so hectic now days being able to drive around the corner through a drive thru for lunch is much easier than making it before work, which is why it is easy to gain weight.
