According to the United States Census Bureau that average life expectancy of an American is seventy-eight, which has increased over the last couple of years. Even though the life expectancy of an American has risen, there are still many health risks that Americans have to endure every year. Whether its genetic inheritance from parent to child or addictions that can trigger cancers or other illness. There is a silent epidemic that is consuming all Americans and that is obesity. And in recent studies done by the World Health Organization (WHO) obesity has increased since the 1980s, and in 2014 thirty-nine percent of the population was overweight, that is 1.9 billion adults. But it’s not always about reducing, but more on the lines of balancing the intake of calories you consume each day. On an average, the typical consumption for men is 2,640 calories, and for women, it is 1,785 this is according to the U.S Department of Agriculture (USDA). But it is very unlikely that Americans stay around this range of calories as every day the intake more than they should, this would be one reason for the obesity epidemic. Others would include not eating enough of the right foods, but instead more processed foods, that are very high and fat and sugar, for example, fast food. Therefore since the intake of calories is becoming one of the main factors of the obesity epidemic, I propose that the portions that people eat should be controlled. As I look at the problem, I think about the military and the MREs (Male ready to eat). The MRE is used to feed troops, when they are off into war and is consisted of a good balance meal. In an MRE, each meal pertains 1250 calories which are made up of thirteen percent protein and thirty-six percent fat, and fifty- one percent carbohydrates. A full day meal consists of three MRES (U.S ARMY). I think that of big grocery chains would supply their stories with this type of merchandise or the government approved this sale to the general public, I feel that it would control …show more content…
