When I found out that this wonderful country does not have a national policy of paid maternity leave I was shocked, since this is a human right for mothers and babies and it is also a life or death issue for poor single mothers... Among the “women’s rights debate”, who is fighting for this right? Even worst: Why American mothers do not realize that this is an injustice? Why some intelligent educated women accept this situation without complaining? According to the International Labor Organization – ILO, United States does not provide support to new mothers. In most countries in the world –more than 120- paid leave is guaranteed for working moms, while more than 50 countries provide wage benefits for fathers, according to the ILO. U. There are many benefits (both mental and physical) to mothers, too, as women who breast-feed are less likely to get cancer, obesity, diabetes and heart problems. We all must understand that maternity leave benefit it not a waste of money, or a socialist/communist policy, paid maternity leave is an investment in a healthy future. Scientific research shows that the impact of paid leave extends far beyond the workplace to critical health outcomes for babies and parents. A 2011 study showed that ten additional weeks of paid leave could reduce infant mortality by as much as 10 percent. The U.S. has the highest infant mortality rate of all wealthy/developed countries, and we also have racial health disparity implications, since the infant mortality rate of Black infants is already 2.4 times higher than that of white infants.
