Next Stop Mars As I searched for my I-search topic several ideas ran through my head. Then I thought about how the topic is supposed to affect us personally. This made me think about what is affecting everyone, and I thought about the rapidly growing population of Earth. As the population increases to extreme size, space on Earth begins to reach it’s maximum. What top scientists are thinking is the next step sits 140,000,000 miles away. Mars has many features that make it the best planet to sustain life. Mars has many similar features to Earth including size, climate, and elements. Though these are important, the number one reason Mars is a great fit is that scientists have recently discovered water

This is one of the reasons people become so interested in it. With planetary exploration one planet comes to mind, Mars. The reason Mars is the top planet on the list of candidates is Mars’ size, make-up, location, and thanks to advanced research, it’s water. In recent years NASA has been able to confirm that there is water on Mars just under the surface. These features make it the perfect planet to try to sustain life on. This leads to the next reason people get interested in this topic, the fact that people will not be able to live on Earth forever. Scientists look to Mars as the next great unknown. What these scientists are doing are studies determining which technologies will work, and there are even full-scale tests with sets designed to analyze what astronauts will be able to cooperate for years in confined quarters with the others. With all the technology and studying, people believe sustaining life on Mars is a very good possibility, but we are still many years from it becoming a …show more content…
Instead, two major non-profit groups are each trying to get to the red planet first. These two groups are Mars One and SpaceX. Both agencies have elaborate plans on how they will travel and live on Mars. According to Mars One “Human settlement is the next giant leap for mankind”(Mars One). While all this may seem a long way from becoming reality, SpaceX founder Elon Musk believes humans could be traveling to Mars by 2020 (Drake, 2016). This is very startling to some people, but Musk believes strongly in his timeline. Both SpaceX and Mars One have already began parts of their plan. Mars one selected their crew members in 2013, and they are beginning their difficult training this year (Mars One). This training is to prove that the crew members are able to live in close quarters with their peers for years, while living in stressful conditions. Based on Mars One’s website this group of people will train in the simulation until their mission in 2031. Though Mars One seems like the more advanced project, SpaceX is just as important because Mars One plans on using SpaceX’s advanced space ship technology to get there. Based on the two group’s plans, these practices will be put into use very
Headed by former NASA ‘Mars Czarr’ Orlando Figueroa, it will put together a framework for funding and planning smaller Mars missions beginning as early as 2018” (Reardon). NASA is fighting for this program and desperately wants to be funded. According to NASA this Mars mission is a top priority for them, and it shows by how hard they are trying to at least start the mission during this decade.
Elon Musk, NASA, and Nikola Tesla have all incorporated the first steps into the plans for colonizing Mars. Nikola Tesla let out his ideas to colonize mars and now Elon Musk and NASA are currently in the lead of many in the race to colonize this planet. There are ideas to colonize other planets but Mars and the moon are closest to our accomplishments. In 2011 a project was launched known as Mars One. The founders of this project, Bas Lansdorp and Arno Wielders, launched an official idea to send one hundred people to mars for a permanent vacation by the year 2020. Sarah Cruddas from the CNN website says, “The journey itself is expected to take around seven months and recent MIT studies found that, should explorers succeed in landing, using current technology they would likely survive only 68 days.” Crudas goes on explaining how the volunteers are ready to take on any risks for scientific purposes. Mars One is requiring the winning applicants years of training and isolation before being able to set foot on a spaceship that takes them to mars. Later in Febuary 27, of the year 2013 another idea based around moving to mars was proposed by Dennis Tito known as “Inspiration Mars.” The initial plan for “Inspiration Mars” was to send a couple into Mars. They require large funds that were never met and Inspiration mars was called off. The founders of project one had a backup plan known as “Plan B” which
I believe that it is possible for Mars to have the ability to support life because of the possibility of there being water increases the probability of organisms being able to exist on Mars’ ecosystem, therefore the chance of Mars being able to sustain life. Furthermore, even if water never did or will, as a matter of fact, exist on Mars there is a chance that an organism is able to survive without it.
Mars is most likely planet that has the ingredients of life that is need for a living organism in the solar system other than the known planet Earth. These ingredients of life are the following. The planet in question must be at the correct distance from a host star. Mars is a planet that is on the outer edge of being correct distance of its host star. Next item is that the planet must have water. Mars has water but its water is frozen in the planet ice caps or under the soil. Last is that the planet must have an atmosphere that is suitable for living organisms. Mars’s atmosphere is weak and it is being blown away by the solar winds form the host star. (""Life" on Mars") With Mars’s weak atmosphere the surface temperature of the planet is every cold and the water on the surface of plane...
Findings on Earth and other planets suggest extraterrestrial life could live in outer space, further encouraging scientists to proceed with their research. Discovering water is a great step for finding habitable planets. According to new studies, “Mars had a shallow pool of briny water on its surface long ago, NASA said in announcing what could be the strongest evidence yet that the now-dry Red Planet was once hospitable to life. ‘If we are correct in our interpretation, this was a habitable environment,’ Mr. Squyres said. These are the kinds of environments that are very suitable for life” (Bridges). Little evidence proves beings live on Mars now, but this dried up water source provides strong proof that Mars could have inhabited life in the past. Water is a key element of survival, and can also house marine life. Marine life could have simply died out when the water dried up. If Mars was truly inhabited by extraterrestrials long ago, then scientists cannot rule out living beings on any other planet in the universe, and must continue searching. Europa, one of Jupiter’s moons houses...
...egular people, believing that if someone was to go to Mars they might have been able to survive A variety of organic compounds present may mean a life is probable. Also, if the trip to Mars in 2023 turns out to be a positive one, then it will prove to everyone that in the future more and more people will move to this other planet. A lot of people will find it unnecessary to stay on Earth if they can start a new life somewhere else in the galaxy. Even though the trip will have America paying billions and billions of dollars, it truly is worth it. A life on Mars could mean living to an older age and being healthier. The point of going to the Red Planet is to find out if there is a better life somewhere other than on Earth. Just like NASA astronaut, Buzz Aldrin said, humans will most likely reach Mars and when they do humans will turn into a two-planet species.
Mars would be a challenging place for humans to live because of its dry conditions (lack of water) and cold temperatures. The frequent sandstorms and dust devils whipping across the surface of the planet would also make human existence difficult. Scientists believe that Mars had a think atmosphere in the past. They also think Mars was warmer and may have once contained liquid water.
Mars is our next best hope in life on another planet. Because of science mankind can grow and harvest plants in the modified mars soil, make a thick warm atmosphere, and drink no frozen mars water. Mankind can grow and flourish more as a species with this idea of colonizing mars. With more scientific advancements we can colonize mars and we will colonize mars.
Scientists have dreamt over the possibility that it may be possible to live on another planet. Some think that Mars has that potential to support life, if it's hidden resources are uncovered and exploited to their full potential. There is even evidence that it once contained enough water that it had been possible to hold life. Think about it, what if we could transform it into such a place, even if only our children's children get to see any result? The following will describe Mars, present evidence of ice and water, give possible ideas for the future exploration of Mars, and give reasons for why it is important.
Last night, Elon Musk unveiled plans in a speech given in Mexico City to start sending humans to Mars, thus making us an “multiplanetary species” by 2024. I understand that this is a big deal for many, but I mean really? Is this what we are turning to in today’s world where we are experiencing refugee crises, wars on unprecedented levels and scandals in the highest offices in the land? Let me start off by focusing on the financial implications of Musk’s venture. $200,000, according to Musk, would be enough for one interplanetary space ticket.
So again, why stop now? Jessica Orwig with Business Insider writes, “If Americans do not go to Mars, someone else will. And that spells great benefits for whoever succeeds.” Mars is a cold, mysterious, gold mine of new information waiting to be discovered. And the Space Race made it evident that the competition is deeper than merely exploring space, but also a competition of political and economic leadership.
“We only have 100 years left before Doomsday - and we need to get off the earth long before that comes to pass.” Renowned Physicist Stephen Hawking made this statement in May of 2017, and he is backed by Tesla and SpaceX founder and CEO, Elon Musk. With climate change, epidemics, overdue volcanic eruptions and asteroid strikes, and not to mention human overpopulation, we need to find a new planet. Elon Musk has already started plans to send cargo and crew to Mars in 2024, Musk states, “ You want to wake up in the morning and think of a future that is going to be great - and that’s what being a spacefaring civilization is all about. It’s about believing in the future and thinking that the future will be better than the past.
Many scientists have devoted time and money in hope of finding answers. Scientists have found many places that could possibly be holding life. For fifty years, many missions have been on Mars looking for space being. When searching, water is key.
There are many reasons that space exploration should continue. If Earth ever becomes too overpopulated or over polluted, then perhaps people can move to Mars. The world population in 1970 was approximately 4 billion people, and is currently nearly 6 billion people. The world population in 2015 is estimated to be 7 billion people. There is a possibility that there are useful resources on Mars. Scientists have found ice and some other clues, such as craters, volcanoes, and valleys, that have led them to believe that there was once life on Mars, and they believe that sometime in the future, should planet Earth need to be evacuated, humans will be able to live there (Jakosky 142). Many of the rocks on Mars appear to have been formed by gasses, breathable by humans and other creatures. A process called terraforming will allow astronauts to make use of the resources that are on the planet and create an atmosphere that will support life. One method for terraforming is that scientists would convert the gaseous rocks back into gasses, and use gas-eating organisms to eat the gas, which results in the formation of other gasses. If these organisms continue the cycle, then Mars would have a stable atmosphere for humans to live in (Getz 39).
Mars is a very similar planet to earth in relation to size and atmosphere. Therefore it seemed like the most likely place to search for life. At the end of the 19th century, an American named Percival Lowell built himself an observatory so that it was possible for him to study Mars in intimate detail when its orbit was closest to Earth. At this time it had recently been suggested that the planet had a system of channels on the surface, present from the evaporation of flowing water. Looking through his telescope Lowell became convinced he could see a network of artificial canals. This led him to believe that there were intelligent beings on Mars who had built these canals. However, spacecraft have now visited Mars and found that there is no evidence of water at all. It is now thought that the lines he could see were the combination of Lowell's overactive imagination, and scratches on the lens of his telescope. We are now searching one of Jupiter's moons, Europa, as this seems to be the next likely place to hold life.
