Male circumcision is a surgical procedure in which the skin covering the end/head( foreskin) of the penis is removed at birth in boys. American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) states that circumcision is usually performed by a doctor in the first few days of life in United States and that an infant must be stable and healthy to safely be circumcised. In United States, circumcision is practiced for religious and social purposes, it started from Biblical times as God's instruction to Abraham. “Parents ultimately should decide whether circumcision is in the best interests of their male child. It keeps the sensitive head protected, facilitating intercourse, and prevents the surface of the glans from thickening and becoming desensitized. Also, within the inner surface of the foreskin are a series of tiny ridged bands that contribute significantly to stimulating the glans" (Mckinny & Ross 2013). With above knowledge of the anatomy of the foreskin, I do not support circumcision because it has exposed boys to many risks and anxiety in parents. Some of the reasons why parents will not have their child circumcised includes; fear of the risks in the surgery, belief that the foreskin is needed, belief it can affect their sex life in adult life (some believe that circumcision makes the tip of the penis less sensitive) causing a decrease in sexual pleasure. Finally proper hygiene practice can lower health risks STD and cancer of the penis (AAP.org). Two year ago, my grandson had the problem of inadequate skin removal after his circumcision, with unacceptable appearance and he had to go in for a second surgery after 18months causing us a lots of anxiety and much pain to
