My argument is something not many people have to deal with, but for some it is a struggle they live with everyday including myself. These people I happen to be talking about are vegans, and how we have very limited lunch options in school, so I am going to put it upon myself to discuss why schools should consider vegan lunches. Doing this would help give everyone an opportunity to have a full meal at lunch, nutrition and health, could possibly increase test scores. Being vegan calls for no butter, eggs, cheese, milk, meat, fish, gelatin, honey and many more products; and as you can probably imagine it is very difficult to find things that don't have those products especially at schools who aren’t vegan friendly. Walking into the lunch room and watching people eat their chicken with mac and cheese and pepperoni pizza with milk chocolate pudding is pretty intimidating for me as a vegan because I have to be forced to be very limited with unsatisfying things. In “Bad Food? Tax it, and Subsidize Vegetables”, Mark Bittman suggests that the people of America should stop eating unhealthy foods so often. In the article, Bittman tells his audience that people have “heart disease, diabetes and cancer are all in large part caused by the standard American Diet” (page 35). He also states that eating healthy can result to a better health care system saving millions of lives. The big issue is Americans eating unhealthy every day, but proposing a plan to help stop it from happening.
After taking a closer look at the American diet, it 's clear to see Americans are in a lot of trouble. The average American diet is filled with lots of greasy fast food, large cuts of meat, salty junk food and sugar-laden sodas. This tradition is then passed on to the children and creates a legacy of ailments, disease and a lower quality of life. To many people, plant-based eating sounds like a death sentence. In reality, it 's all about getting creative with the foods you already like. It also involves intentional meal-planning and organization. However, your health is worth it. The ability to experience a better quality of life should be motivation enough to start changing your eating habits. Consider a few of these simple ways to incorporate plant-based eating into each meal without eliminating delicious taste.
Mark Bittman is a cookbook author, a journalist and has appeared on television. The experience from these projects has given Bittman the knowledge and credibility to argue his point on the matter of America’s diet in his Ted talk segment. In this Ted talk, Bittman discusses the effect of livestock production on the environment and how the way they are treated makes even natural food sources have unnatural ingredients. He mentions how over the few decades the children from the past ate differently at home than the way they do now. He promotes the idea of eating more organic foods such as fruits and vegetables than to continue the mass consumption of meat and junk foods. Bittman talks about the way that modern day America is eating and how it is not only causing harm to the bodies of people, but the state of the environment in the world.
One way would be to insist on offering a vegetarian lunch option at least once a week on school menus. Children could learn to eat what their counterparts around the world eat. On a healthy note, children would be given a break from government surplus, like milk and cheeses, which are traditionally high in sodium and fat.
I don't think our school lunch is healthy because it has fat and too much sodium. Although it is good it is fattening it is the reason for much of the obesity in the U.S. Many kids have no other option to eat the unhealthy school lunches or they will be hungry.
