Recently in our society, there has been a major trend in trying to eat more healthily. Healthy eating is an especially big trend for women. In fact, according to ‘TopRNtoBSN.com, it is “out of the 1 million Americans that are vegan, 79 percent of them are women” ‘(2014) . Furthermore, with all of this discussion of health trends definitely makes people wonder what does the word health actually mean? Well, health is “the condition of being well being and free from disease”( Health, 2015).Also, with all that in mind, people still ponder about what exactly they should be doing in order to live a healthy life. Meat is a major part of people’s diets all around the globe. According to Jennifer Preyss, award-winning writer for the Victoria Advocate, “About two billion people around the world that eat meat in their diets” (2012).Now, two billion might not seem like a large number due to the world population being about seven billion but, one cannot wholly deny the fact that 2 billion people is still quite a lot of people in world to be consuming meat. Also, in 2015, Roberto Ferdman, a reporter for the Washington who is well known for covering topics regarding food, exclaims that “industrial countries consume about 210 pounds of meat while the countries of the developed world eat about 66 pounds of meat each year”. This is a shocking fact indeed, as it helps to show just how much people in the world are affected by meat-based diets during this modern age . Even in the days of humans hunting and gathering their food, people consumed meat then and they still do now. That being said, people devour meat to survive and thrive. Though, it is apparent to many that time has progressed since prehistoric times, what stays the same is that there are people who still continue to eat meat for the sole purpose of survival and being able to live a healthy lifestyle. One of the most common nutrients that meat is known to provide people with is iron. Iron helps the body produce important nutrients like hemoglobin and myoglobin (Sterbenz, 2013). More specifically, meat has heme iron, which is a type of iron found in substances such as meat that produce hemoglobin. Hemoglobin is a type of protein which helps to carry oxygen in the bloodstream. Therefore, it is of no surprise that people who menstruate need more iron in their diets to make up for the blood they lose during the period of menstruation. Also, meat is known to be an excellent source of vitamin B12, another crucial nutrient to humans. Jennifer Preyss reveals that meat offers important B vitamins and that these vitamins, especially B12, are good for the bones, skin, and blood(2012). A fairly straightforward phrase in which the author demonstrates how meat’s nutrients are essential for making one’s body strong. Since vitamin B12 is so good for the blood, it helps keep people, especially women, from being anemic. Both B12 and iron help to make red blood cells (Sterbenz,2013). The red blood cells are major as they are what carries oxygen throughout our bodies. Without the iron or the B12 to make the red blood cells, we would not have anything to carry the oxygen that we breathe through our bloodstream, and no oxygen means we are not breathing and most likely dead.
